1. Summary
"Chemdog" (also spelled Chemdawg; the originator's own spelling is Chemdog) is a family of clone-only cuts grown from seeds Greg "Chemdog" Krzanowski of western Massachusetts found in cannabis bought on the Grateful Dead tour in 1991 from two Colorado sellers, Joe "B" Brand and Mike "P-Bud" Nee. That 1991 transaction, the find of 13 seeds and the 1991 germination of the first seeds are attested by Krzanowski himself in several interviews and by every derivative account. They are verified as his statement and well-supported overall.1234 The named cuts are Chem 91 (the original "Chemdog" female, a.k.a. "the Dog"), Chem's Sister ("Chemdog A"), Chem D (from a second germination, dated 2001 by most accounts), and Chem #4 (the "Reunion pheno", from seeds given to Joe Brand in 2006).145 What the seeds were is unknown. Joe Brand traced the bud to a California/Oregon-border or Camas Valley, Oregon grower via Crested Butte, Colorado (accounts differ). Breeder ThaDocta (Archive) calls Chem 91 "bagseed from Norcal/Oregon border dank". Krzanowski himself favours Northern Lights in the background. A "Nepali Γ Thai" lineage seen on retail sites has no source.1267 Several details conflict between accounts and are recorded separately below: the price and the venue (Deer Creek vs "Deer Park"); whether Chemdog B was a third keeper or a discarded dud; whether Chem D came from the 1991 or the 2001 germination; and who returned the Chem 91 cut to Krzanowski and when (2006 via Skunk VA, by Skunk VA's own account). Chem D's own identity is also questioned: a West Coast keeper argues on a 2020s podcast that the "real" Chem D is a Chem 91 Γ Super Skunk hybrid and that most circulating "Chem D" cuts are not the original.8
2. Identity
- Names/aliases: Chemdog, Chemdawg, Chem Dog, "the Dog", Dogbud / Chem Weed (the original bag's names); Chem 91 / Chemdawg 91 / '91 Chem / "the 91"; Chem's Sister / Chem Sis / Chemdog A; Chemdog B / Chem B; Chem D / Chemdawg D; Chem #4 / Chemdawg #4 / "Reunion pheno"; Chem 91 SKVA (the Skunk VA-kept Chem 91, see its own dossier
chem-91-skva).129410 The "Dawg" spelling is attributed to Top Dawg Seeds (JJ NYC) renaming its line. P-Bud insists on "Chem Dog".19 - Type as reported: hybrid on Leafly (about 18% THC headline). Grower lore: Chem 91 leans sativa in effect, Chem #4 leans indica. Subcool's 2006 sample notes called Chemdawg "a heavy Indica with a crushing stone".7511
- Era: seeds found 1991; Chem 91 and Sis grown 1991β92; Chem D 2001; Chem #4 2006; public on Overgrow/ICMag 2005β2007; first legal crop in Massachusetts 2021.121210
- Originator: Greg Krzanowski ("Chemdog", b. 1973, Northampton MA). Sellers of the source bud: Joe Brand ("joebrand"/"wonkanobe") and Mike "P-Bud" Nee.249
- Propagation: clone-only cuts. S1s and crosses exist, e.g. Phylos "Chemdog S1 #11" and Mephisto's "ChemD IBL (Rez)".1314
- Region: bud said to come from Colorado (via Crested Butte) and to have been grown on the CA/OR border or in Camas Valley, OR; the cuts were kept in western Massachusetts, then on Staten Island, NYC (the Sour Diesel branch), then in California (the Skunk VA branch).1210
3. Genetics & lineage claims
3a. Bag seed from Dead-tour bud bought from Joe Brand and P-Bud (1991)
Confidence: verified (as Krzanowski's own account; the core facts are in every account).
Danko's 2016 High Times history, based on interviews with the people involved, puts it like this. At the June 1991 Grateful Dead run at Deer Creek, Indiana, Chemdog met P-Bud and Joe Brand and bought an ounce of "Dogbud" for $500. Joe later mailed more ounces to western Massachusetts, and one package held 13 seeds.1 Bobby Black's 2026 profile, from an interview with Krzanowski, gives more detail. He paid $125 for a quarter-ounce (the maximum per customer) at Deer Creek on 1991-06-06. In August 1991 he bought an ounce for $500 that contained 13 seeds, and he called it "the best pot I'd ever seen".2 Krzanowski confirmed "13 seeds" to Cannabis & Tech Today (2021) and said he discarded the one male from the first four he started.3 The widely reposted mid-2000s forum history agrees: an ounce for $500 at Deer Creek, then two ounces shipped, one seedless and one with 13 seeds. It was preserved by Subcool in 2006 and reposted on Overgrow.45 Fat Nugs (2024/2026) and a 2021 Leaf profile give the venue as "Deer Park", which looks like a transcription error.129
3b. Genetic background of the bag seed
Confidence: unknown β every specific parentage is reported at best; recorded as competing claims.
- California/Oregon border or Camas Valley, OR outdoor, via Crested Butte, CO. Joe Brand told Danko the bud came from friends of a friend in Crested Butte and originated on the California/Oregon border.1 Black reports Joe saying he got it from a biker in Crested Butte and that it was grown in Camas Valley, Oregon.2 Archive's Fletcher ("ThaDocta", ICMag, 2015-03-18, quoted on Overgrow): "Original Chem 91 is bagseed from Norcal/Oregon Border dank herb. Nothing more, nothing less."6 Confidence: reported (all secondhand from the sellers; the two locations are not necessarily in conflict).
- Northern Lights background. Krzanowski supports a Northern Lights theory; an Afghan landrace and a "rare Skunk phenotype" also circulate.2 Confidence: reported (originator's opinion, no evidence offered).
- "Nepali Γ Thai". Retail and menu text says the lineage "probably" contains Nepali and Thai genetics. No primary source was found.15 Confidence: folklore.
- Genomic data. Medicinal Genomics released raw shotgun reads (131 Gbp) of a "Chemdawg" sample in August 2011. This was the first public cannabis sequence dump; it is not a lineage analysis.1617 A Phylos genotype of "Chemdog S1 #11" reportedly shows heritage "similar to varieties in OG Kush" with a smaller Skunk-like component. That page now redirects, so this rests on a search snippet only.13 Confidence: reported.
3c. Which cuts came from which germination
Confidence: disputed.
- 1991: Chem 91 + Chem's Sister (A) + Chemdog B; 2001: C, D, E (D kept). This is the High Times version and the forum history text.145 Black's 2026 interview differs in two ways: Chemdog B was "a dud", discarded with the male, so only Chem 91 and Chem A (Sister) were kept by December 1991; and C and E from the 2001 germination were discarded.2 A 2020s Breeders Syndicate podcast guest who says he knew the people involved agrees that only "two keepers came out of the first batch", Chem 91 ("the Dog") and Chem Sis. He adds that a Staten Island friend independently remembers smoking both before 1991β92.8
- High Times, Nov 2008 ("Crazy Composer", Chem D feature): Chemdog grew out "a few of the seeds in 1991 and took three clones β two of which are still very much beloved" (Chemdog 91 and Chemdog A/Sister); in 2001 he grew three more of the original 13 and found Chem D.18 This agrees with High Times/Danko on the dates and with Black on there being only two surviving keepers.
- Chem D among the original three of 1991. Tucson Weekly (2024) lists the three early females as Chemdawg 91, Chem D and Chem's Sister. This conflicts with every other account.19
- Chem D possibly a Chem 91 Γ Super Skunk hybrid, not an original Dogbud seed. On the same Breeders Syndicate episode the guest says he "very strongly" believes the D is a Chem 91 Γ Super Skunk hybrid. His reasons are that it sometimes smells like Super Skunk and herms in weeks 3β4, and that its S1s do not resemble Chem 91 S1s. He also says many "Chem D" cuts in circulation are fakes, possibly sister seeds from the same bag.8 Confidence: reported (one keeper's conjecture, which he labels as such; no genotype data).
3c-bis. Later "Chem" names that are not 1991 seeds (Chemdog's own 2010 account)
Confidence: verified (Chemdog quoted by Danko, High Times, June 2010).
In a 2010 garden visit Chemdog showed newer plants. Chem B (2010) = NYC Hash Plant-13 Γ Chem D, a new hybrid; do not confuse it with the 1991 "Chemdog B". Candy Chem = pollen from a hermed Super Snowdog on the Chem D cut. Barking Dog = a selfed "mystery seed" from the Chem D found by his friend Tone Loc, which Chemdog said reminded him of "the original Chem 91 cut". OG1 = "SFV OG Kush maybe touched with the Chem D": an OG cut from Cali friends that he suspected had been hit by herm Chem D pollen. Mass Purple Kush = a Vegas clone "hit with hermie Chem D pollen". Chemdog Sister (2010) = a "seed from the original Sister", a new phenotype. He said he was "not a professional breeder", grew in BX Pro-Mix with Earth Juice under HPS, flushed for 2.5 weeks, harvested at 52 days, and planned to make seeds for online auction.20 The repeated herm Chem D pollinations he describes are consistent with the Breeders Syndicate guest's report that the D "herms sometimes like crazy in week three and four".8
3d. Chem #4 "Reunion pheno" (2006)
Confidence: well-supported (High Times, the forum history, the Breeders Syndicate guest and JJ NYC all agree on the 2006 reunion; who received the seeds varies).
In 2006 Chemdog reconnected with Joe Brand and gave him 4 of the last 6 beans. They were labelled 1β4, and Joe chose #4 as "the best representation of the original".1458 JJ NYC (Top Dawg) says he helped reconnect P-Bud and Joe Brand with Chemdog.21 Fat Nugs says the seeds went to P-Bud rather than Joe.9 Black's 2026 profile does not mention Chem #4.2
3e. Return of the Chem 91 cut to Krzanowski
Confidence: disputed (in date and in mechanism).
- Skunk VA's account (Pot Cast, 2016-09-01). Skunk VA says he received the Chem Dog cut in Sonoma County in summer 1995, "a few days before Jerry Garcia died" (that is, before 1995-08-09), from a close friend of "G" (Krzanowski). He found Krzanowski on Overgrow in December 2005. In February 2006, during Phil Lesh's New York shows, he flew Chem Dog cuttings back to him. In return he expected Chem's Sister but received Chem D and Super Skunk instead.10 Confidence: verified (as Skunk VA's own statement).
- Tucson Weekly (2024). Krzanowski lost the original cut "sometime in the early 2000s" and traded Chem's Sister to Skunk VA for Chem 91.19 Confidence: reported (no source given; it conflicts with Skunk VA on what was traded).
- High Times says Skunk VA kept the strains alive during Krzanowski's 2011 legal trouble.1
3f. Chemdog as parent of Sour Diesel, OG Kush and others
Sour Diesel is treated in sour-diesel, and OG Kush in og-kush, where the Chem 91 S1 "Lake Tahoe" story is reported and Krzanowski "denies" OG Kush is a Chemdog offspring while believing they are related.2 Krzanowski's own named crosses, per the 2006 forum history and High Times, are: Bubble Chem (Chem's Sister Γ Sagarmatha Bubbleberry); Super Snowdog (Bubble Chem Γ [Super Skunk Γ Oregon Sno]); Giesel (Chem D Γ Mass Super Skunk); Dog Daze a.k.a. Chem Haze (Chem D Γ 1993 Sensi NL#5/Haze); and Chem D Γ P-Bud.15 Confidence: well-supported.
4. Timeline
- 1989-07-02 β Krzanowski's first Grateful Dead show (Foxboro).2
- 1991-06-06 β Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville IN: he buys "Dogbud" from Joe Brand and P-Bud.21
- 1991 (Aug) β An ounce with 13 seeds arrives. Four are popped, one male is discarded, and by late December 1991 Chem 91 and Chem's Sister are kept.21
- 1992 β At a Phish show at Roseland, NYC, Chemdog trades cuttings with "Weasel"; Chem 91 goes to Staten Island (the Sour Diesel branch).1
- 1993 β He studies glassblowing with Bob Snodgrass in Oregon. 1994: attends the Amsterdam Cannabis Cup.2
- 1995 (summer) β Skunk VA receives a Chem Dog cut in Sonoma County.10
- 2001 β Seeds C, D and E are popped; Chem D is kept.124
- 2005-12 / 2006-02 β Skunk VA contacts Chemdog on Overgrow and returns the Chem Dog (91) cut in NYC.10
- 2006 β Reunion with Joe Brand, who gets 4 seeds and picks Chem #4. In May 2006 High Times runs a grow report on Chemdog, and High Times names Chem Dog a Top 10 Strain of 2006. In August 2006 Chemdog visits Subcool and MzJill and shares samples, including Chemdawg, Chemdawg D, Chem's Sister, Sour Diesel, Headband, Dawg Days and Giesel.1510
- 2008-11 β High Times feature on Chem D ("Crazy Composer"): "may very well be the perfect cannabis strain", with low stretch (100β150% vs 200%+ for Sour Diesel).18
- 2010-06 β High Times (Danko) revisits Chemdog's garden (Chem B, Candy Chem, Barking Dog, OG1, Mass Purple Kush). Danko dates his first meeting with Chemdog to the May 2006 "CSI: Cannabis Strain Investigation" story.20
- 2011-08 β Medicinal Genomics releases raw "Chemdawg" genome reads.1617
- 2011-08-02 β His homes are raided. In October 2012 he pleads guilty, and on 2013-01-14 he is sentenced to three years' probation, a $2,500 fine and forfeiture of $300,000. He says he did not handle cannabis again until Massachusetts legalised in December 2016.21
- 2014 β Chem Scout (IC Collective) wins Best Indica at the HT Cannabis Cup in Sonoma.1
- 2015 β A Next Harvest Chem entry tests at 32.13% THC at the Colorado Cannabis Cup.1
- 2021 β First legal Chemdog harvest at Canna Provisions (Holyoke/Sheffield MA); the Smash Hits brand sells Chem 91.312
- 2026 β Krzanowski co-founds the Arcana Collective.2
5. Notable cuts / phenotypes
- Chem 91 ("the Dog", "Chemdog") β the original 1991 female and the mother of Krzanowski's clones.2 Smash Hits describes "gas, skunk, citrus petrol, earthy hops, and black pepper".12 Rasta Jeff (Grow From Your Heart #659) and Leafly reviewers call it skunkier and more fuel-forward than Chem D or #4.7 Skunk VA's lineage of the cut is covered in
chem-91-skva. - Chem's Sister / Chem Sis (Chemdog A) β a 1991 keeper. One account says the person who brought cuts west found it "ugly" and declined to take it.8 It is the parent of Bubble Chem.1
- Chemdog B β a third female (High Times) or a discarded dud (Black).12
- Chem D β the 2001 keeper. It is described as gassy, with "tennis ball" and halitosis-like funk; it is a heavy Cal-Mag feeder, rarely kicks pollen and "almost never variegates" (a keeper's diagnostic for the real cut). Fakes are said to be common.8 It is the parent of Giesel, Dog Daze and Tres Dawg (via the Top Dawg backcross).121
- Chem #4 (Reunion pheno) β the 2006 seed. It is described as citrus/"Pine-Sol"/lemon and more indica-leaning, and is the parent of Stardawg (Chem #4 Γ Tres Dawg).1721
- Seed lines: Phylos "Chemdog S1 #11";13 Mephisto Chemdogging (ChemD IBL "(Rez)" Γ an auto);14 Archive Chem 91 crosses (Chem 91 Γ Dosidos #18, Hazmat OG = Chem 91 Γ Face Off OG);22 Freeborn Chemdog 91 Γ Hindu;22 Riot Chem 91 ("The Dog") Γ Hawaiian Lites.22
6. Historical descriptions by era
1991β2000 (tour/underground). The sellers named it "Dogbud" because it would "knock you on your back like a dog" and "Chem Weed" for its "chemmy" taste. P-Bud thought the grower had used a lot of chemicals.92 The bud was the "best pot" Krzanowski had seen.2 On Wall Street the Sour Diesel branch sold for $800β1,000/oz in the late 1990s.1
2005β2010 (forum era). High Times (2008) on Chem D: bushy, a superb calyx-to-leaf ratio, tight buds to the bottom, fast to finish, a large yield. Ripening buds smell "skunky, rotten", like "a gum or mouth infection" (the author nicknamed it "Dental Plan"). It outyielded his M-39 side by side.18 Subcool's August 2006 smoke notes describe Chemdawg as "a heavy Indica with a crushing stone", pungent funk, a thick and harsh smoke and a well-cured golden sample. He rated Giesel as more pungent and "more sour" than Sour Diesel.5 The May 2006 High Times grow report describes Pro-Mix, Fox Farm Marine Cuisine, mild feeding, leaching before harvest and organic pest control.1
2015βpresent (legal market). Leafly lists caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene as dominant terpenes, "chemical, diesel, pungent" flavours, euphoric/relaxed/tingly effects and dry mouth as the common complaint, with about 2,500 ratings averaging 4.3.7 The Breeders Syndicate guest describes Chem D's grow traits as heavy Cal-Mag demand, rare herms in some cuts, and non-foxtailing tight buds as the real-cut marker.8
7. Cannabinoid & terpene profile
Caveat: strain names are not reliable chemotype identifiers (Smith et al. 2022; Reimann-Philipp et al. 2020). The "Chemdawg" label in lab data mixes Chem 91, D, #4 and unrelated product, and many "Chem D" cuts are disputed. The numbers below describe what is sold under the name.
| Dataset (flower only) | Name match | THC avg (median) | n | Top terpenes (avg %) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smith 2022 (6 states, 2014β2021)23 | all Chem names | 19.0% | 321 | caryophyllene 0.49, myrcene 0.47, limonene 0.30, humulene 0.18 (n=193; total 2.13) |
| Smith 2022 | "Chemdawg/Chemdog" only | 18.7% | 265 | caryophyllene dominant in 80/162 |
| Smith 2022 | Chem #4 names | 20.2% | 43 | myrcene 0.62, caryophyllene 0.51 (n=27) |
| WA I-502 2014β17 (Jikomes & Zoorob)24 | all Chem names | see fragment | 761 | β |
| Current public records 2015β202625 | "Chemdawg" | 20.4% (20.8) | 516 | caryophyllene 0.86, myrcene 0.55, humulene 0.36 (n=50) |
| Current public records | "Chem 91" | 23.2% (23.1) | 224 (201 NV) | limonene 0.31, caryophyllene 0.24 (nβ205) |
| Current public records | "Chemdawg 91" | 23.6% (24.0) | 68 | limonene 0.94, caryophyllene 0.69 (n=12) |
| Current public records | "Chem D" | 25.2% (25.1) | 66 | limonene 0.71, caryophyllene 0.54 (n=47) |
| Current public records | "Chem 4" / "Chem Dawg #4 SWC" | 20.2% / 21.8% | 41 / 83 | caryophyllene 1.36, humulene 0.60 (SWC, n=83, one NV producer) |
| Contest | Next Harvest Chem, Colorado Cup 2015 | 32.13% | 1 | β1 |
Caryophyllene/humulene-forward profiles dominate the "Chemdawg" label. Nevada "Chem 91" lots skew limonene-first. Single-producer series (for example "Chem Dawg #4 SWC", 83 NV lots) dominate several of these rows, so they reflect individual growers as much as the cut.
8. Community sentiment
- Potency / heavy, long-lasting high β common, positive, all eras (Subcool 2006; Leafly; r/trees posts asking whether Chemdog lives up to its name).5726
- Chemical / diesel / skunk "funk" aroma β common, positive, and the defining trait since the "Chem Weed" naming.9127
- Heritage reverence: "the mother of Sour Diesel and maybe OG" β common, 2006βpresent.1199
- Authenticity anxiety β common among growers. Fake Chem D cuts and SKVA vs "original" 91 debates appear on THCFarmer and Overgrow (2010sβ2020s), and Krzanowski estimates 85% of strain-named product is mislabeled.8273
- Dry mouth; harsh smoke β occasional, negative.75
- Spelling pedantry ("Chemdog", not "Chemdawg") β occasional, neutral (r/trees 2024).26
Representative paraphrases: Subcool (2006) said the Chemdawg sample hit noticeably harder than the strain before it and that its funk recalled other pungent skunks;5 a 2024 r/trees poster said hearing "Chemdawg" for "Chemdog" is a top pet peeve;26 a West Coast keeper (Breeders Syndicate) said the best-testing "Chem D" he has smoked "is not the real D";8 Skunk VA said the plant shown as "the chem dog" in a mid-2000s High Times article was clearly not the plant he had.10
Overall score: 78/100 (Leafly about 4.3/5 from about 2,500 ratings per search snippet; grower forums are reverent but contentious about cut identity). Sample size estimate: about 2,500 Leafly ratings (snippet), 100 r/trees post titles 2015β2026 (Arctic Shift archive; mostly photo posts), about 40 Overgrow search hits, and 3 long-form podcast interviews.
Conflicts with lab data: consumer lore treats Chem as a sativa-leaning "cerebral" chem, while lab data under the name are caryophyllene/myrcene-dominant (a profile Smith et al. associate with "indica"-labelled product). Nevada "Chem 91" lots read limonene-first, unlike the label-wide pattern.
