    1. Summary

"Punta roja" (US 1970s–80s usage) or "punto rojo" (modern Colombian usage) is a Colombian market name for red-tinged, red-haired sativa buds. It is not a documented single landrace. In the 1970s US import trade it was a grade alongside Santa Marta Gold. The 1978 High Times Encyclopedia lists "Santa Marta punta roja" among the "fabled cultigens". It quotes BogotΓ‘ prices for "Punta Roja superb sweet smoke" and says red strains mature from about December at about 4,000 ft.1 High Times columns of 1980–83 call the mid-1970s "Santa Martas and Punta Rojas" the high point of Colombian imports. One 1983 piece glosses punta rojas as "red tips". Another distinguishes early Santa Marta reds from "the later punta rojas", and 1975 is named as a great year.2345 In the 21st century "Punto Rojo" is a Colombian street and brand name. A 2013 police seizure report used it for marijuana said to be grown by the FARC's Sixth Front in the Cauca mountains.6 Colombian home growers on Reddit (2020–2022) describe Punto Rojo as a long-season, very tall "landrace sativa" that has been popular for decades.7 One forum post (THCFarmer, opened only as a search snippet) describes Punto Rojo seed collected in December 2002 on the western Andean slopes near Cali.8 No seed company documents a collection. Modern "Punto Rojo" crosses (e.g. Γ— KY Jealousy, Γ— Mendo Breath) appear only in reseller listings.9

    3. Genetics & lineage claims

3a. Punta Roja was an upland Santa Marta red grade (about 4,000 ft) of the 1970s export trade

Confidence: reported (one reference work plus magazine columns from the same publisher).12345

3b. Modern "Punto Rojo" is a southwestern Colombian (Cauca) landrace or market type

Confidence: reported (police statement in news; Colombian growers' posts; one forum post).678 Whether the 1970s Caribbean "punta roja" and the modern Cauca "punto rojo" are the same genetic population is unknown. The shared name may simply describe red pistils.

    4. Timeline

    • Mid-1970s β€” "Santa Martas and Punta Rojas" at their peak in the US trade; 1975 named as the great vintage (HT Connoisseur, Jan 1983).34
    • 1976–78 β€” BogotΓ‘ price lists: Punta Roja "superb sweet smoke".1
    • Apr 1980 β€” HT wishes for "three different shades of punta roja".2
    • May 1982 β€” HT Connoisseur recalls "genuine primo redbud" Punta Roja.5
    • Jul 1983 β€” HT history piece: Colombian "blondes, golds and punta rojas ('red tips')" upgraded US tastes after Operation Intercept; imports 2.5–6.5% THC.5
    • Dec 2002 β€” Punto Rojo seed reportedly collected near Cali (forum).8
    • 2013-01-15 β€” Police seizure of 3.8 t of "Punto Rojo" attributed to the FARC Sixth Front, Cauca.6
    • 2020–2022 β€” Colombian Reddit growers post Punto Rojo grows.7

    6. Historical descriptions by era

    • 1979 (Novak): Punta Roja "almost tasteless but very high in THC", said to be more spiritual. This contrasts with the 1978 "superb sweet smoke" description.10
    • 1970s–early 1980s: resinous density; sweet smoke; "rich and ripe, heady, dreamy" redbud; red aroma that, one grower said, was lost when the seed was grown in Florida.1511
    • 2020s: plants over 3 m in the ground; long vegetative and flowering periods.7

    7. Cannabinoid & terpene profile

No lab records under "Punto Rojo" or "Punta Roja" in Smith 2022, WA I-502 or the state records used here. The 1983 HT figure of 2.5–6.5% THC for 1970s imports is a magazine estimate, not a dataset.5

    8. Community sentiment

    • Common (1980–83): nostalgia for the mid-1970s; benchmark for Colombian quality.23
    • Occasional (2020s): local pride; slow flowering.7
    • Score: not estimated.

    9. Open questions / could not verify

    • Whether the 1970s Caribbean "punta roja" and the modern Cauca "punto rojo" are related populations.
