Dossier

History & sources

1. Summary

Stardawg is a seed strain from Top Dawg Seeds (JJ NYC). The breeder has given a detailed account on a 2021 podcast. JJ crossed Chem D with an Afghan male from Sensi Seeds, then backcrossed twice to Chem D, producing Double Dawg and then Tres Dawg, which he treated as a male "representation of the Chem D". He then crossed Tres Dawg with a Chem #4 cut he had just obtained. That cross "eventually became a star dog".1 High Times (Danko 2016) independently prints the same formulas: Tres Dawg = Chem D Γ— Double Dawg and Star Dawg = Chem #4 Γ— Tres Dawg.2 The lineage is therefore verified as the breeder's statement and corroborated.

Two keeper phenotypes are documented:

  • The "Corey" cut, which JJ found among the first four or five seeds.
  • Stardawg Guava, found by Andre Grossman, a High Times-affiliated photographer. It became an HT office strain and won 1st Sativa at the 2012 Denver Medical Cup (The Clinic on Holly).13

Kyle Kushman's phenotype placed 2nd at the San Francisco Medical Cup. JJ dates this to 2010 and High Times to 2011.14

2. Identity

  • Names/aliases: Stardawg, Star Dawg, Stardog, Stardawg Guava, Corey cut, Star Dawg IX; not "Top Dawg" (a Barney's Farm/Amnesia Cup strain of 2007–2009).135
  • Type as reported: listed both as sativa (Guava, Denver 2012) and as indica (Seattle 2013 Cup); hybrid.36
  • Era: late 2000s.
  • Breeder: JJ NYC (Top Dawg Seeds; JJ Edwards per a Craft Growers Network episode title).17
  • Propagation: seed, plus keeper clones (Corey, Guava).

3. Genetics & lineage claims

  • 3a. Stardawg = Chem #4 Γ— Tres Dawg; Tres Dawg = (Chem D Γ— Sensi Afghan) BC2 to Chem D (via Double Dawg) β€” verified (breeder, 2021) and well-supported (HT 2016 agrees).12
  • 3b. JJ chose the Sensi Afghan over the Sensi Hindu Kush because it was "not very dominant in taste and smell", thick-stemmed and single-cola.1

4. Timeline and awards

  • Late 2000s β€” Tres Dawg, then Stardawg seeds; the Corey cut selected.1
  • 2010-12 β€” HT reviews Top Dawg's Chemdog Sister (contact: Top Dawg Seeds at thcfarmer.com).8
  • 2010 or 2011 β€” Kyle Kushman's Stardawg: 2nd Hybrid, SF Medical Cup (year conflict).14
  • 2012 β€” Denver Medical Cup: 1st Sativa, Stardawg Guava (The Clinic on Holly). Dawg's Waltz (Tres Dawg Γ— Purple Urkle) tops Denver for THC.39
  • 2013 β€” Denver: 3rd Medical Sativa, Stardawg Guava (The Clinic Colfax). Seattle U.S. Cup: Star Dawg 2nd Indica (Evergreen Patient Network); Tres Dawg 2nd Sativa (Fweedom Collective).106
  • 2017 β€” I-95 = (Triangle Kush Γ— Legend OG) Γ— Star Dawg (Top Dawg / Money Mike), HT Top 10.11
  • 2020s β€” DNA Kosher Dawg = StarDawg (Guava) Γ— Kosher Kush; DNA Generation X18 uses Banana Stardawg.12

5. Historical descriptions

Chem-fuel; the Guava cut is fruitier. JJ says today's Guava is "more chem four-ish", while the original Stardawg Guava was "more kind of 91-ish… a little more fuel-y, sour-y".13

6. Cannabinoid & terpene profile

Caveat: strain names are not reliable chemotype identifiers.

The caryophyllene-dominant profile matches the Chemdawg label pattern, consistent with the all-Chem pedigree.

7. Community sentiment

  • Potent chem-fuel β€” common, positive.316
  • Guava cut prized (HT office strain) β€” common.1

Overall score: 80/100 (an estimate). Reddit not sampled.

8. Open questions

  • The year of Tres Dawg and Stardawg creation (JJ's podcasts give no year in the excerpts read).
  • The SF Medical Cup year (2010 vs 2011).
