1. Summary
Strawberry Cough is a clone-only, sativa-leaning East Coast US cultivar that became famous through Kyle Kushman (Adam Orenstein), the former High Times cultivation writer who received it as a cutting, named it, spread it through New York around 2000–2004, then carried a tray of clones to California in 2004.123 Kushman has consistently said he did not breed it; what he has said about where it came from and what it is has shifted over time: his 2020 written account gives "Strawberry Fields × Haze" received in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1999, while his 2017 livestream called it "a novice first-time accidental cross" and a 2025 podcast description places the discovery in "a New York grow-op in the early 2000s".1245 Since 2020, and loudly since May 2025, a competing account from Jeff Cavanagh (who says he handed Kushman the cut in Connecticut in 2002) credits a Burlington, Vermont grower, Jon Daniels, as breeder and gives the parentage as "The Cough" (NL5 × Haze) × a bag-seed male, "leaning toward Orange Krush"; Cavanagh states he fed Kushman the "Strawberry Fields × Haze" story as a fib.67 Dutch Passion's seed version (on sale by at latest January 2012; described by Dutch Passion in 2013 as "an exclusively Dutch Passion creation" blending North American and European genetics) and Dinafem's "Original Strawberry Cough" both claim descent from the Kushman line, which forum growers have disputed since at least 2011.89101112 No source found has published lab chemistry on a provenance-verified Kushman cut; aggregate "Strawberry Cough" data are myrcene-led with pinene/caryophyllene, with a minority of terpinolene-forward batches.13414
2. Identity
- Name: Strawberry Cough. Aliases: Kyle Kushman's Strawberry Cough, KKSC, "the Cough" (NYC slang, though "The Cough" is also claimed as the name of a parent), JDSC ("Jon Daniels' Strawberry Cough", Cavanagh's term).147
- Type as reported: sativa-dominant hybrid; "80% sativa / 20% indica" (Dutch Passion 2013, Westword 2016, ILGM); "75/25" (RQS, BC Bud Depot, old DP text); Seedfinder lists the clone-only entry as "mostly indica", CSI Humboldt's S1 likewise.915161718
- Era: cutting in circulation on the US East Coast by ~1999–2002; famous in NYC delivery scene early 2000s; national from 2004.1719
- Breeder / originator: disputed. Kushman: popularizer and namer, not breeder (his own statements since at least 2017).21 Named breeder candidates: an unnamed Bridgeport, CT hobby grower (Kushman); Jon Daniels of Burlington, VT via Jeff Cavanagh (Cavanagh, 2020–2025).167
- Propagation: clone-only original; multiple seed versions (Dutch Passion, Dinafem, Homegrown Cannabis Co., RQS, ILGM, Hazeman, BC Bud Depot, Apothecary Genetics, CSI Humboldt S1, United Cannabis Seeds, others).201021162223242518
- Region of origin: US Northeast (Connecticut / Vermont / New York, per competing accounts).
3. Genetics & lineage claims
3a. Strawberry Fields × Haze (Kushman's published account; the "industry standard" lineage)
Confidence: disputed (originator's own statement, but contradicted by the person who says he supplied the cut, and by Kushman's own other statements)
In his first-person High Times piece (30 Mar 2020) Kushman writes: "Strawberry Cough is a cross of Strawberry Fields and Haze. Strawberry Fields is actually an indica from upstate New York that was grown next to strawberry fields to mask the odor," adding that "Crossing Strawberry Fields with a Haze was a complete accident."1 He names no Haze line and no breeder. The same parentage is repeated by Seedfinder's clone-only entry (sourced to forum posters "Texas Kid" and "Nebu"; Nebu says he worked with Kushman at High Times and that Kushman received a clone, not seeds), by RQS, Homegrown Cannabis Co., Apothecary Genetics, Hazeman, ILGM (Seedfinder), Leafly ("thought to be"), Weedmaps, Westword and most retail copy.1716212523132615 Leafly's own "Strawberry Fields" page is a different, later Sagarmatha strain (Tangie × Strawberry Banana) that lists Strawberry Cough as a parent, which has caused circular confusion.27
3b. "Novice first-time accidental cross" from Bridgeport, CT; genetics undisclosed (Kushman, 2017)
Confidence: verified as a statement; content unresolved
In the High Times 500th-issue livestream segment (uploaded 31 Jul 2017) Kushman says: "So many people think that I made the Strawberry Cough, and I've never ever told anybody that I did," and "It really came from a novice first-time accidental cross from a breeder in Bridgeport Connecticut." He did not give parents in that interview (as summarized by Cannigma, which links the video).24 This is compatible with 3a only if the Bridgeport grower made the Strawberry Fields × Haze cross; Kushman's 2020 text does not say who made the cross.
3c. "The Cough" (NL5 × Haze) × bag-seed male, probably Orange Krush; bred by Jon Daniels, Burlington VT; handed to Kushman by Jeff Cavanagh in CT in 2002
Confidence: reported (single first-hand witness, self-published; internally consistent across 2020 video and 2025 posts; no documents)
Jeff Cavanagh's YouTube video "The REAL STORY of the Strawberry Cough" (20 Oct 2020) describes how "the genetics of the 'OG' Strawberry Cough were handed to Kyle Kushman" and credits "@soma4u2 Jon Daniels".6 Posting as Tropicav22 on Overgrow (8 May 2025) he wrote that he "did not breed SC, my boy Jon Daniels living in Burlington, Vt at the time did"; that "the Cough, is NL5xHaze"; that the JDSC is "male Cough x female Orange Krush, but that's just a best educated guess" because the male was a bag seed; that he "told a few fibs to Kyle... Like the genetics were Strawberry fields x Haze. Complete lie"; and that "KK got the cut from me in CT, in 2002."7 A 2026 Australian review blog repeats a variant (Daniels → Cavanagh ~1997 in Vermont → Kushman in Bridgeport early 2000s), citing only Cavanagh's video.28 A clone vendor lists an "Original Cut! (John Daniels cut)" clone "given to Kyle Kushman by Jeff Cavanaugh".29 Kushman responded by video within days (a podcast episode titled "Did Kyle Kushman Create the Strawberry Cough?" was posted 9 May 2025, the same day an Overgrow member posted "Kyle responds to this thread"); the show notes say he "never claimed to breed the strain — only to share it" and describe "a chance discovery in a New York grow-op in the early 2000s".57
3d. Older forum variant: Strawberry Fields grown in Vermont; Kushman received seeds and selected the clone
Confidence: folklore (forum-only, 2012; contradicted by Kushman and by Nebu)
Rollitup poster racerboy71 (Nov 2012), quoting the "Texas Kid" text, held that Strawberry Fields was a Vermont indica bred to finish before snow, crossed to "an outstanding pure Haze male", and that Kushman found the Cough pheno "sorting through dozens of these seeds".3017 Another poster (Rare D MI) claimed the strain had been in Michigan since 1997 and that 1997–98 High Times issues showed "Strawberry Cough gardens in Detroit" (unverified).3012
3e. Pheno of NL5/Haze from a family farm (podcast recollection)
Confidence: folklore
An Overgrow member recalled a YouTube podcast from ~2010–2015 in which "country dudes" from upstate NY or CT said the Cough was a pheno pulled from NL5Haze grown on their family farm and that they gave a cut to Kyle.7 Interesting because it independently matches Cavanagh's "NL5 × Haze" parent claim, but it is an unsourced memory.
3f. Dutch Passion's seed line: "North American genetics blended with European genetics from our genebank"; "exclusively Dutch Passion creation"
Confidence: verified as Dutch Passion's statement
Dutch Passion's 7 June 2013 blog: "She is an exclusively Dutch Passion creation and is 80% sativa, 20% indica... created by blending North American cannabis genetics with some European genetics from our genebank. The European genetics have only been used for Strawberry Cough."9 The current product page says only "partly North American and partly European" and names no parents.8 Seedfinder's genealogy for the DP version shows "Erdbeer × Unknown Indica, USA" and "Unknown Sativa" nodes (Seedfinder's reconstruction, not DP's words); Seedfinder's Erdbeer entry is a Swiss clone-only (since ~1994, "probably a sativa with Afghani genes") — no primary source ties Erdbeer to Dutch Passion's cross, so treat the Erdbeer link as reported at best.2031
3g. Kushman supplied Dutch Passion with seed made from his clone (possibly × Sweet Tooth)
Confidence: reported (Kushman's account as paraphrased by one secondary writer; Dutch Passion does not say this)
Cannigma (2020) summarizes Kushman's 2017 interview: Henk van Dalen of Dutch Passion asked for genetics, insisted on seeds rather than clones, so Kushman "had to cross his KKSC" to produce them; Cannigma says the cross partner "is somewhat implied" to be Sweet Tooth.4 Rollitup posters (2012–2015) variously said Kushman "sold the clone to DP around 2005", or that the DP-from-Kushman story "is an internet rumor".1230
3h. Dinafem "Original Strawberry Cough": "Cough" (Haze-heavy sativa) × "Strawberry" (indica), brought from NYC by a mutual friend of Kushman and Dinafem
Confidence: verified as Dinafem's statement; provenance unverified
Dinafem's catalog text (via Seedfinder and quoted in a 2020 grow journal): "This American strain was developed in New York State by the breeder Kyle Kushman... A common friend of Kyle Kushman and Dinafem offered to bring us this delicious genetics from NYC so we could try it and develop seeds... The genetic base is composed of a Sativa strain with a strong Haze component called Cough, and an Indica strain called Strawberry."1032 Note the naming convention ("Cough" + "Strawberry") coincidentally echoes Cavanagh's claim that "The Cough" was a parent.
3i. Other seed makers
- Hazeman Seeds: F1 Strawberry Cough seeds grown out, best male hit to "Ken's cut Strawberry Cough clone" (a backcross to a clone of unstated provenance).23
- Homegrown Cannabis Co. (Kushman's partner brand): lists "Strawberry Fields × Haze", feminized photoperiod, 63–67 days, 20% THC; the product page says Kushman received a clone called "The Cough" from a Connecticut grower, and does not state whether the seed is an S1 of the clone or an outcross.2133
- CSI Humboldt: "Strawberry Cough S1 — Kyle Kushman Strawberry Cough × Kyle Kushman Strawberry Cough", 63 days, feminized.18
- Royal Queen Seeds: "Strawberry Fields × Haze", 75% sativa, 9–10 weeks; RQS's blog gives the Bridgeport-1999/rockwool/Brooklyn story and quotes Kushman: "I just made her popular".1634
- BC Bud Depot: "75% sativa / 25% indica", Seedfinder lineage "Unknown Sativa × Unknown Indica, USA"; 4th place Sativa, Karma Cup 2014 (Seedfinder).24
- Apothecary Genetics: "Strawberry Fields × Haze", 8–9 weeks.25
- ILGM: "widely assumed" to derive from Haze; "originally only a clone... Dutch breeders later developed a seed lineage".22
- Not verified to exist: Devil's Harvest, Crockett Family Farms, Flying Dutchmen, Barney's or Seedsman in-house "Strawberry Cough" lines (no catalog page found; Seedsman search returned nothing).

5. Notable cuts / phenotypes / remakes
- Kushman cut ("KKSC") — the clone-only reference. Kushman (2020): 10–11 weeks to ripen, stretches "up to 200%", heavy nitrogen feeder, "very heavy yields".1 Forum growers: 7.5–9 weeks (Texas Kid), hard to grow well, needs N through week 4 of bloom, heavy branches need staking, "no ceiling" high, "light strawberry with heavy haze overtones" (Rare D MI, 2012).3017 A 2025 podcast says the cut lost vigor and was revitalized via meristem tissue culture.5
- "Strawberry Diesel Coffin" cut — claimed (2012) to be a clone-only pheno from the same mother; disputed in-thread.30
- Dutch Passion seed line — three phenotypes per Seedfinder growers (two tall sativa-leaning, one short indica-leaning); herm reports (2012); "purples" (forum claim that the true clone does not); 9 weeks (DP) vs 11 weeks in a 2013 DP-published grow.204849
- Dinafem "Original Strawberry Cough" — 65 days, 625 g/m² claimed; a 2015 Rollitup grower found it sativa-leaning with little strawberry flavor.1012
- Homegrown Cannabis Co. feminized — 63–67 days (Seedfinder) vs 10–12 weeks (product page); Illinois grower reported corkscrew growth and a short, bushy plant.213346
- CSI Humboldt S1 — selfed Kushman cut; 2025–2026 Reddit growers running it side by side against Dutch Passion.1850
- Hazeman BX — "Ken's cut" × F1-derived male.23
- "Fake" Strawberry Cough — 2011 Colorado report of "trays of hundreds of mis-labeled clones"; 2012 Rollitup: dispensary "Strawberry Cough" often not the real thing; 2015: cut sold via Buds & Roses Instagram; 2025: cut sold in Studio City for ~$200.5130127
- Named hybrids: Brian Berry Cough (TGA: SC × Space Queen), Strawberry Daiquiri (TGA: SC × Jack the Ripper), Strawberry Lemonade (Sour Lemon OG × SC), Strawberries & Cream (SC × The White), Chemdog D × Strawberry Cough (CSI).150
6. Historical descriptions by era
2005–2013 (forums, DP blog, early Reddit)
- Effects: "a shot up to the moon" (ICMag, undated snippet); "no ceiling" (Rollitup 2012); DP growers: near-instant onset, "very mind clearing", 3–3.5 h, abrupt comedown, "excellent for my anxiety" (2013).493048
- Aroma: light strawberry + heavy Haze (clone); DP grower: little smell at chop, strong fresh-strawberry smell only after two months' cure (2013).3048
- Cough: "watch out for the expansion... coughing for about 30 minutes" (DP grower 2013); DP: "cough gently and you will pick up the Strawberry taste, and that is where the name comes from".489
- Structure/flowering: DP 9 weeks, growers 11 weeks; stretch "close to tripling"; foxtailing calyx stacking; 140 g/plant typical.948
- Difficulty: clone "hard to grow well", locks out if overfed (2012); DP seed "almost grew themselves" (2013).309
2014–2019 (Westword, Leafly reviews, Reddit)
- Westword 2016: creamy strawberry-milk smell that overpowers the spicy Haze; "around 80 percent sativa"; "uplifting... can be rather stoney too"; nine-week flowering "too long for some"; smell arrives week 4–5 of flower.15
- Leafly reviewers (2014): seed vs clone versions circulate; "hits the lungs harder than most".27
- Reddit 2019: "smells just like some spicey, ancient, mystical incense when smoked"; repeatedly named as a social-anxiety-friendly sativa.52
2020–2026
- Kushman 2020: "ampheta-weed", "no come-down" (veganic), smoke and flower smell identical, "delicious stickiness on the throat".1
- Reddit: disappointment with distillate carts labeled Strawberry Cough ("tastes like Koolaid", "fake terps") versus praise for flower; nostalgia ("haven't seen in over 10 years"); growers prefer CSI S1 or the cut to European seed.50
- Grow reports: Homegrown seed 10–11 weeks, modest THC expectations 15–20%.46
7. Cannabinoid & terpene profile
Strain names are not reliable chemotype identifiers; "Strawberry Cough" covers at least one clone, several unrelated seed lines, and relabeled distillate. No dataset found distinguishes the Kushman cut.

- Smith et al. 2022 (PLoS ONE, ~90k samples) is the right dataset for a terpinolene-vs-myrcene question, but the text and Fig. 8 name only Purple Punch and Tangie; Strawberry Cough is not confirmed among its 41 analyzed names.57
- Kannapedia: no "Strawberry Cough" genetic report found (only "Strawberry" and "Strawnana" entries).58
8. Community sentiment
Sample: ~100 top Reddit submissions 2009–2026 (pullpush), ~400 comments across seven keyword pulls, Rollitup/Overgrow threads (2012, 2015, 2025), Leafly (2,994 ratings, 4.3/5), Allbud (125 votes, 4.6/5), DP-published grower quotes.501353
Themes
- Clear, energetic, social, anxiety-friendly sativa — common, positive, all eras (2009–2026). Repeatedly recommended for social anxiety, ADHD focus, daytime use; a minority report raciness or paranoia.505248
- True strawberry smell/taste when real — common, positive; "strawberry milkshake", "fruity roll-ups", "Cupid's arrow for potheads".5015
- Expansion / cough — common, neutral-to-positive, treated as proof of authenticity.4827
- Real cut vs seed/fake — common, negative toward Dutch Passion seed (2011–2015: "sorry excuse", "purples", "not close to the clone"), toward dispensary mislabeling (Colorado 2011–2012), and toward distillate carts (2019–2026: "tastes like Koolaid").11305150
- Nostalgia / "white whale" — occasional, 2023–2026: "original Kyle Kushman cut" listed as dream genetics; "haven't seen in 10 years".50
- Breeder-credit controversy — occasional before 2025, common after May 2025; split between "Kushman never claimed to breed it, he spread it" and "Kushman took credit / erased Daniels & Cavanagh". Polarity negative toward Kushman in Overgrow, mixed on Reddit.737
- Grow difficulty — occasional: clone described as finicky N-feeder with long flower; European seed versions easy but variable.30946

Overall score: 82/100 for the flower/cut (consistently top-tier sativa in every era); ~55/100 for seed versions and carts bearing the name. Sample size estimate: ~3,200 Leafly/Allbud ratings plus ~500 forum/Reddit posts read.
Conflicts with lab data: users frame it as an "energetic sativa", yet the most common aggregate chemotype (myrcene-led, THC ~16–19%) is the profile users elsewhere call "indica-like"; Seedfinder's clone-only and CSI S1 entries are even tagged "mostly indica". The minority terpinolene-forward COAs fit the "racy/uplifting" descriptions better but may be unrelated plants or added terpenes. Several Reddit users attribute the effect to ocimene or pinene without data.
