    Full history

    1. Summary

Wonderbud (also written "WonderBud", "Wonder Bud", abbreviated "WB") is an obscure seed line that circulated in the North American online grow community between roughly 2000 and 2003. The earliest dated record found is a Cannabis World grow report captured on 2000-12-08 that lists "Wonderbud from Bill Wonder" among strains germinated in July 2000.1 Community strain-database comments signed "Tim Haight" and "Bill Wonder" describe it as a heavily inbred, "true breeding" line that existed in two stable forms ("Bill's" and "Matt's"), and that was used as a parent for the derivative seed lines SuperJack, Wonderjack and "Black Magic".234 No source found states Wonderbud's own parentage, and the breeder is known only by a forum handle. By 2003 the line was being described as "a bit controversial", with second-hand reports of hermaphroditism and a general sense that it had been over-hyped.52 No lab data, no commercial seed-bank catalog listing, and no modern database entry (Leafly, Seedfinder, AllBud, Wikileaf, Strainly) were found. Everything below rests on a handful of forum posts and one archived community database; confidence is reported throughout except where independent sources agree.

    2. Identity

    fieldvalue
Names / aliasesWonderbud, WonderBud, Wonder Bud, "WB"
Type as reportedNot stated for Wonderbud itself. Derivatives were sorted into "very indica dom" (Wonderjack) and "very sativa dom" (SuperJack), implying Wonderbud expressed both.24 Treated as unknown.
EraIn circulation by mid-2000; listed in a community database by July 2002; still being asked about in 2003 and 2006.1657
Breeder / originator (as claimed)A forum member using the name "Bill Wonder" (also "Mr. Wonder"); a second stable form attributed to "Breeder Matt"/"Matt". Real identities unknown.128
PropagationSeed. Sources discuss seed germination problems and a flaky "Wonder seed coating"; no clone-only cut is mentioned.2
RegionUnknown. Contextual hints only: the main venues were Cannabis World and the Cannabis Culture forums (a Canadian magazine's board); a 2006 enquirer listed "northern Ont"; the 2000 grow report was from a European greenhouse that received seeds from a North American forum member.137
Not to be confused withWilliam's Wonder / Willy's Wonder (SSSC, 1980s); Wonder Woman (Nirvana); Wonderberry (Sagarmatha); Wonder Kush (SickMeds); "Super Jack" as sold today (modern listings give Super Silver Haze x Jack Herer, unrelated to the 2001 SuperJack); "Wonder Buds Cannabis Co." (Niagara Falls, Ontario retailer, opened 2020). No source links any of these to Wonderbud.

    3. Genetics & lineage claims

    3.1 Wonderbud's own parentage: unknown

No source found names the parents of Wonderbud. The closest statement is Tim Haight's: the line "was bred differently than anything else I know of", with DJ Short's Blueberry being "the closest thing I can think of to it in terms of how it was created", and the seeds "very inbred".24 This describes a breeding method (multi-generation inbreeding and selection), not parents. Confidence: unknown (open question).

3.2 Breeder attribution: "Bill Wonder", with a second form from "Matt"

    • Dr.Turner's December 2000 report: "WB: is Wonderbud from Bill Wonder".1
    • Strainbase comments (signed Tim Haight): "2 stable forms of Wonderbud, Bill's and Matt's"; "Breeder Matt's version of Wonderbud"; "Bill Wonder's version of Wonderbud".234
    • Rollitup, 2013 (Vincent VonBlown): says he helped "Mr. Wonder" produce Wonderjack from Wonderbud.8 Confidence: well-supported (three independent sources from 2000, c.2001-02 and 2013 agree on the "Bill/Mr. Wonder" attribution). The person's real identity, and whether "Matt" was a co-breeder or a later selector, are unknown.

    3.3 Derivative: SuperJack = Matt's Wonderbud x Mr. Soul's Cinderella 99 (with pollen-contamination caveat)

Tim Haight writes that SuperJack is "Breeder Matt's version of Wonderbud crossed with Mr. Souls' Cinderella 99", sativa-dominant and a large yielder, but adds that the seed room was accidentally open-pollinated by two males (a Cindy 99.25 male and one of his Hawaiian/Haze males), so some "SuperJack" seed may actually be Matt's Wonderbud x Hawaiian/Haze.24 Cannabis World thread titles "SuperJack two weeks in SWC bubbler" (May 2001) and "SuperJacks @ 5 weeks/veg" (July 2001) show it was being grown out then.9 Confidence: reported (single signed comment; the author himself flags uncertainty).

3.4 Derivative: Wonderjack, two competing descriptions

Claim A (Strainbase, c.2001-02): Wonderjack = Bill Wonder's Wonderbud x a "Cinderella x Northern Lights" hybrid; made in both reciprocal directions; testers received the Wonderbud-female x (Cindy x NL)-male form; indica-dominant, small yielder; about 7-8 weeks flowering.3 Tim Haight separately describes it as "a Cinderella hybrid cross, crossed with Bill's version of Wonderbud".2 Claim B (Rollitup, 2013): Wonderjack = Wonderbud x a Brothers Grimm hybrid described as "Aurora Borealis x Cinderella"; the poster says he helped Mr. Wonder make it, and later crossed it to wild hemp to make "Wonderjacks".8 The two accounts agree on Wonderbud x (Cinderella-type hybrid) but differ on the other half (generic "Cinderella x Northern Lights" vs. Brothers Grimm "Aurora Borealis x Cinderella"). They may be reconcilable, but no source reconciles them. Confidence: disputed (each individually reported).

    3.5 Derivative: "Black Magic" = Tim Haight's "New Hawaiians" x Bill's Wonderbud

Haight: "The cross between my New Hawaiians and Bill's version of Wonderbud was very good (aka Black Magic). I sent samples... to Gypsy Nirvana and Dankmaster".24 Not to be confused with later commercial "Black Magic" strains. Confidence: reported.

    3.6 Planned derivative: "G-Wonder" (G13 x Wonderbud) by Dankmaster

Dankmaster (a Cannabis World breeder credited in the 2000 report with "GFW", G13 x Fig Widow) wrote that "wonderstrains" would be the base of his next projects with G13 and that he could not wait "to get the G-Wonder underway".21 No evidence it was released. Confidence: reported (intent only).

    3.7 Derivative of a derivative: "Wonderjacks" = Wonderjack x wild hemp (2013)

Single Rollitup poster; clone run and smoke report, 2013.8 Confidence: reported.

    4. Timeline

    • 2000-07-15: seeds (including Wonderbud "from Bill Wonder") put to germinate for a 45th-parallel European greenhouse test grow; report posted on Cannabis World and captured 2000-12-08. Earliest dated mention found.1
    • 2000-12-08 to 2001-01-18: thread active (multiple Wayback captures of reply and print pages); replies discuss other strains, none add Wonderbud detail.19
    • 2001-05 to 2001-07: Cannabis World Image Gallery threads "SuperJack two weeks in SWC bubbler" and "SuperJacks @ 5 weeks/veg" (titles only survive).9
    • c.2001-2002 (undated): Tim Haight, Bill Wonder and Dankmaster comments on the Cannabis Genetics Index / Strainbase Viewer; Haight mentions using a SuperJack photo "for seed sales at Rizzles".234
    • 2002-07-10: Strainbase index capture lists WonderBud, SuperJack and Wonder Jack.6
    • 2003-03-02: Cannabis World Advanced Breeding, "Need info on Wonderbud or crosses": a grower gifted Wonderbud seeds notes the breeder "was a bit controversial" and that a friend had declined to grow them over hermaphrodite reports; the only reply says to use the search engine.5
    • 2003-06-29: an image named wonderbudmales.JPG captured in Cannabis World's uploads folder (image not retrieved; URL only).9
    • 2006-12-16: Breedbay "Breeders Library": a northern-Ontario member asks for Wonderbud and Purple Kush info; page 1 replies discuss only Purple Kush ("Wonderbud, I'm not real familiar with").7
    • 2013-03 to 2013-06: Rollitup "Wonderjacks Clone" grow and smoke report; gives the Rollitup version of Wonderjack lineage.8
    • 2016-11-20: last Wayback captures of the Strainbase entries; the host now redirects to a hosting-company page.2

    5. Notable cuts / phenotypes / remakes

    • "Bill's" vs "Matt's" Wonderbud: described as two stable, true-breeding forms. Haight's remarks imply Matt's form gave the sativa-leaning SuperJack and Bill's gave the indica-leaning Wonderjack, but nothing describes how the two forms themselves differed.24
    • No named clone-only cut of Wonderbud was found; the Rollitup "Wonderjacks" clone is two generations removed.8
    • Remakes: none found. No seed company has been found offering Wonderbud at any time.

    6. Historical descriptions by era

2000 (European greenhouse, from seed; Dr.Turner-)1

    • Uniformity: all Wonderbud plants "identical".
    • Flowering: "the fastest flowering of the group" (group = G13 x Fig Widow, Serious Bubblegum, DJ Short Blue Moonshine, (NL#5 x SK#1) x Hawaiian).
    • Aroma: "fruity sweet".
    • Structure: "hard rock buds".

    c.2001-2002 (indoor; Dankmaster, Strainbase comments)2

    • Structure and growth: keeps producing new bud sites at the lowest levels and "keeps on going"; still lots of new growth at 63 days; initially skinny with little leaf, then a rapidly densifying canopy; a trained plant ("beach ball") carried roughly 20 tops; a male with very thick stems and short internodes.
    • Resin and density: "very snowy bud", "boulder density".
    • Aroma: "nice fruity smell".
    • Smoke: early samples "very smooth and quite potent"; "truly smooth smoking thats not harsh".
    • Seedlings: a characteristic "Wonderbud deformity" look in early leaves that grows out; a seed coating that flakes off when wet, making viability hard to judge.
    • Reputation: explicitly calls it a "hyped up strain" that "may have been overhyped" while defending its potential.

c.2001-2002 (breeder side; Tim Haight, Bill Wonder)234

    • Germination: seeds "very inbred" and "a little sluggish to germ"; recommends moist warm cheesecloth.
    • Smoke: Haight says both Wonderjack parents (that is, Bill's Wonderbud and the Cinderella hybrid) are "very hacky" and "make your lungs ache". This conflicts with Dankmaster's "truly smooth" report.
    • Derivative flowering times: Wonderjack about 7 weeks (Bill Wonder) or about 8 weeks (Haight).

    2003 (second-hand)5

    • Rumoured hermaphroditism; breeder "a bit controversial".

2013 (Wonderjacks, two generations removed; Vincent VonBlown)8

    • Pine and "Christmas candy" taste, strong potency, fast, high-yielding, performed well outdoors and under fluorescents; self-described as "more or less half ditch weed" because of the wild-hemp cross. Not a description of Wonderbud itself.

Difficulty, yield figures and exact flowering days for Wonderbud itself: not reported in any source.

    7. Cannabinoid & terpene profile

No laboratory data of any kind was found for Wonderbud or any derivative (SuperJack, Wonderjack, Black Magic, Wonderjacks). The line predates consumer lab testing and appears never to have reached a tested legal market. Strain names are not reliable chemotype identifiers; even if a sample labelled "Wonderbud" were tested today, there is no chain of custody linking it to the 2000-2003 seed line.

    8. Community sentiment

    • Sample size: six distinct commenters across 2000-2013 (Dr.Turner-, Dankmaster, Tim Haight, Bill Wonder, Dunhill, Vincent VonBlown) plus one unanswered 2006 enquiry. This is far too small for any score; overall_score is left null.
    • Recurring themes:
      • Uniform, fast, frosty, dense, fruity: positive, 2000-2002 (2 sources).12
      • Hype and controversy around the breeder: neutral to negative, 2001-2003 (2 sources: Dankmaster pre-empts "skeptics" and calls it overhyped; Dunhill relays "controversial" and hermie talk).25
      • Germination and seed-quality issues: negative, c.2001-02 (Haight, Dankmaster).2
      • Harsh smoke vs smooth smoke: conflicting (Haight vs Dankmaster).2
      • Obscurity: by 2003 and 2006 people were asking for basic information and getting little back.57
    • Representative paraphrases:
      • Dec 2000, Cannabis World: the Wonderbud plants were all alike and finished fastest in the greenhouse, with a sweet fruity smell and rock-hard buds.1
      • c.2001-02, Strainbase: a grower says most of what was claimed about Wonderbud matched what he saw (very frosty, dense, fruity and smooth) but that the strain had been overhyped.2
      • Mar 2003, Cannabis World: a grower gifted the seeds asks what to expect, noting the breeder was controversial and a friend had avoided them over hermaphrodite rumours.5
      • Dec 2006, Breedbay: an Ontario member asks for any description; respondents only know Purple Kush.7
    • Era shift: enthusiasm (2000-02) to skepticism and obscurity (2003 onward). No modern (post-2013) discussion found.
    • Conflicts with lab data: none possible (no lab data).

    9. Open questions / could not verify

    1. Actual parentage of Wonderbud: never stated anywhere found.
    2. Real identities of "Bill Wonder", "Breeder Matt" and "Tim Haight"; whether Haight was a co-breeder, distributor or tester.
    3. Whether Wonderbud seed was ever sold commercially. Haight mentions "seed sales at Rizzles" for the derivatives; no catalog listing for Wonderbud itself was found in archived Emery, Legends, Seeds Direct, Seed Boutique, Dr Chronic or Hemp Depot pages.
    4. Nature of the "controversy" referenced in 2003. The Cannabis Culture forum threads where it presumably played out could not be located (Wayback CDX for cannabisculture.com/forums carries no thread titles in URLs; Overgrow's CDX index was unreachable during this research).
    5. Whether the "redhat" and "HAIGHT" photo galleries said to exist in the cannabisculture.com pic archive survive anywhere.
    6. Whether the 2013 "Aurora Borealis x Cinderella" and the c.2001 "Cinderella x Northern Lights" descriptions of Wonderjack's second parent refer to the same Brothers Grimm hybrid.
    7. Region of origin.
    8. Any connection to "Winter Wonderbud": none found (see that dossier).
