1. Summary
Skunk #1 is a seed-propagated polyhybrid of Afghani, Colombian Gold and Acapulco Gold bred in California by Sam the Skunkman (David Paul Watson, 1948β2025). It is the foundation hybrid of the Dutch seed industry.123 Sam wrote in 2006 that he bred it himself, "not some made up collective". He dated the line to 1976 and called a widely copied "communal Bay Area breeders' club / Jingles" origin story fiction.4 Contemporary print sources credit the "Sacred Seed Company". High Times (March 1987) says Nevil's Seed Bank was selling Skunk No. 1 "originally developed by the Sacred Seed Company", that it "first became available around 1980", and the Seed Bank's 1986/87 catalogue advertised it.5 Skunk #1, entered by Sam's Amsterdam company Cultivator's Choice, won the first High Times Cannabis Cup. That Cup was judged in January 1988 and reported in May 1988 with Skunk #1 on the cover.6 Several points are disputed: the release date (1976 vs. c.1978β1980), whether Sam arrived in the Netherlands in 1984 or 1985, a possible Thai component, and an alleged 1985 arrest. Sam says he selected the line sweeter over about ten years. The original pungent "Roadkill Skunk" form is widely said to have disappeared from commerce, a recurring theme in grower sentiment.478
2. Identity
- Names/aliases: Skunk #1, Skunk No. 1, Skunk Number One, "Skunk"; "Sweet Skunk" (Sam's selected line) vs "Roadkill Skunk"/RKS (older pungent form); Skunk #2 (a more RKS-like sister line Sam says he did not work).47
- Type as reported: hybrid. Sensi says 65% indica / 35% sativa.9 Dutch Passion's listing says "75% sativa".10 Seedfinder's Cultivator's Choice listing says "mostly sativa".11
- Era: California 1976β1984/85; Netherlands from 1984/85.
- Breeder: Sam the Skunkman (David Watson): Sacred Seeds in California, then Cultivator's Choice in Amsterdam. The line was later maintained separately by The Seed Bank (sold to Sensi in 1991), Sensi, Dutch Passion and many others.41213
- Propagation: seed line (Sam says it was kept by seed only until he moved to the Netherlands, where he began making seed from selected clones).4
- Region: Santa Cruz County, California β Amsterdam.122
3. Genetics & lineage claims
3a. (Afghani Γ Colombian Gold) Γ Acapulco Gold
Confidence: well-supported
The Sensi Seeds blog relays Sam's account as follows. The first cross was Afghan indica Γ Colombian Gold. That hybrid was outcrossed to Acapulco Gold to improve stability, shorten flowering and raise yield. Of 30 hybrids tested at Sacred Seeds, Skunk #1 "showed the least segregation", which made it suitable for true-breeding seed.2 Todd McCormick (High Times, 2023), a long-time associate, gives "(Afghan x Colombian Gold) x Acapulco Gold".1 Leafly (2020), High Times (2022), Leafly's strain page and Dutch Passion all name the same three components. Dutch Passion's listing reads "25% Afghani, 25% Mexican Acapulco Gold and 50% Columbian Gold. Inbred since 1978".3141510 I did not open any text Sam wrote himself that names the cross order. The 1987β1989 High Times sources do not state parentage.
3b. A Thai component
Confidence: disputed
High Times' report on the first Cannabis Cup (May 1988) describes the winner as "Skunk #1 (a Thai/Mexican/Afghan)".6 Sensi's own product page says the original skunk hybrids combined landraces "from Central and South America, Afghanistan, and Thailand".9 Ed Rosenthal suspects Thai genetics, but High Times notes this has "never been publicly acknowledged".14
3c. Breeder: Sam alone vs. a communal "Sacred Seeds collective"
Sam as breeder: verified (his own statement). Collective/Jingles story: folklore.
In 2006 ICMag members reposted a long text by "NdF". It describes Skunk #1 as a communal project of a Bay Area breeders' clique. In this version a grower called "Jingles" kept an unstable c.1969 Colombian Gold à Afghani "skunk" plant, Acapulco Gold was added to make crossing easier, seed went on sale in '78 or '79, and Sam was busted, rescued clones from a dumpster and served time.4 Sam_Skunkman replied the same day: "the post above is just made up shit⦠Skunk #1 was bred by me not some made up collective. I was not busted⦠Never served a day."4 The Jingles version still circulates, for example in Alchimia staff comments (2021).7 Leaf Magazine (2025) calls Sacred Seeds Sam's own company, "America's first commercial seed bank".12
4. Timeline
- Early 1970s β Sam travels the hippie trail and begins collecting and crossing varieties in Santa Cruz County.112
- 1976 β Sam: "In the beginning, 1976, most SKUNK #1's were skunky as hell."4 McCormick: Skunk #1 seeds released by Sacred Seeds in 1976.1 (disputed with the next entry)
- c.1978β1980 β Other accounts: "first became available around 1980" (High Times 1987);5 "first went on sale in '78 or '79" (NdF);4 "inbred since 1978" (Dutch Passion);10 "late 1970s" (Leafly).3
- 1984 or 1985 β Sam takes Skunk #1 seed lines to the Netherlands. Leaf says 1984 with about a quarter million seeds;12 McCormick says Nevil acquired Skunk #1 from Sam in 1984;1 Sensi's blog and VICE say Sam visited in 1984 and arrived at Schiphol in spring 1985.216 (disputed) Seedfinder quotes a 1985 Cultivator's Choice catalogue: "Creators of 'Sacred Seeds', 'High Breed' and 'Select Seeds'β¦".11
- 1986-11-06 β High Times visits Nevil. The article (March 1987) says the Seed Bank sells Skunk #1, Early Girl and California Orange, "originally developed by the Sacred Seed Company"; the Seed Bank 1986/87 catalogue ad lists "Skunk No. 1, Early Pearl, and Northern Lights".5
- January 1988 β First annual High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. Skunk #1, entered by Cultivator's Choice, wins; the May 1988 cover photo is by Robert Connell Clarke.617 (High Times 2022 misdates this to 1987.14) High Times explains it disclosed genetics only for the winner.18
- 1988 β The UK "Exodus Cheese" clone is reportedly selected from a 1988 pack of Sensi Skunk #1.7
- January 1989 β Ed Rosenthal: Skunk #1 "was originated by Sacred Seeds and distributed to the seed companies", which now keep separate, slowly diverging populations.19
- 2006-12-13 β Sam's ICMag account of the line's history and selection.4
- 2025-01-27 β Sam dies.12220
5. Notable cuts / phenotypes / remakes
- Sam's "sweet" Skunk #1. Sam says he selected the best plants for about ten years, making the line "a bit sweeter" each year because he disliked the couch-lock of the pungent form. In the Netherlands he crossed his best 10 females with his best 10 males to make 100 test populations of 200 plants each, then used the most consistent female Γ male pair to make seed. He says most other companies' Skunk lines were made from his stock.4
- Roadkill Skunk (RKS) / Skunk #2. Sam (2006) says he still held RKS in seed but had not re-released it.4 Alchimia credits a more Afghani "Roadkill" Skunk to Nevil's Seed Bank line, now at Mr. Nice.7 Reddit growers describe RKS as "elusive", and seed sellers advertise "original 80s RKS stock" (unverified).8
- Diverging company populations. Rosenthal (1989) notes the companies' separately maintained populations were already diverging.19 NdF names a Cultivator's Choice version (later sold by TFD as "the Pure"), a Seed Bank version at Mr. Nice, and Shantibaba's "Shit" (Skunk #1 Γ Afghani).4 This comes from the account Sam calls unreliable.
- Exodus Cheese (UK). Said to be a Skunk #1 phenotype from a 1988 Sensi pack.78
- Early hybrids: Skunk #1 Γ South African (Cultivator's Choice);11 Early Pearl/Skunk #1 Γ NL5/Haze (1989 Cup, Seed Bank); Haze Γ Skunk #1 (1992); Master Kush = Hindu Kush Γ Skunk #1 (Cup listings).17
6. Historical descriptions by era
1976β1985 (California). Sam: early plants smelled "just like a dead skunk", noticeable outdoors "a few blocks" away. The line was heterozygous but bred "pretty much true". He preferred the high of the sweeter selections.4
1987β1989 (first Dutch era). High Times' "Connoisseur" called it "The Dom Perignon of domestic marijuanaβ¦ Very clean, cerebral high", with the aroma of "fine perfume" early and skunk if picked late.5 A 1988 High Times grow article recommended Skunk #1 as a true-breeding "set seed type" alongside Northern Lights and Hash Plant.6 The first Cup report said Skunk #1 "was not the strongest pot at the festival: the pure indicas had more punch" but won on looks, taste and quality of high.6 Readers reported it fetching premium prices.6
1990sβ2000s. In the UK and in media, "skunk" became shorthand for any high-potency weed, starting from a 1995 BMJ letter.16 Sam: "most Skunk seeds available are made by other breeders using my lines".4
2015βpresent. Sensi: 45β50 days flowering, large yield, little stretch.9 Leafly reviewers: skunky, pungent, earthy; relaxed/happy/euphoric; dry eyes and mouth; occasional paranoia.1521 Growers say modern packs are sweet rather than skunky.2214
7. Cannabinoid & terpene profile
Strain names are not reliable chemotype identifiers. Smith et al. (2022), Jikomes & Zoorob (2018) and Reimann-Philipp et al. (2020) show the mapping from retail labels to chemistry is weak. These are retail-label statistics, not genotyped samples.
| Measure | Value | n | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total THC, flower (Smith 2022 dataset, label "Skunk #1"/"Skunk 1") | mean 17.5% (median 17.4; range 4.3β27.7) | 88 | Smith 2022 data (CC0) |
| Dominant terpene (Smith 2022) | myrcene in 12/21; Ξ±-pinene 5/21; limonene 2/21 | 21 | Smith 2022 data |
| Terpenes (Smith 2022, mean %) | myrcene 0.65, Ξ±-pinene 0.18, ocimene 0.15, caryophyllene 0.15, limonene 0.12, Ξ²-pinene 0.12; total 1.65 | 21 | Smith 2022 data |
| Chemotype (Smith 2022) | THC-dominant 87, balanced 1 | 88 | Smith 2022 data |
| THC (max reported), WA I-502 2014β2017 | mean 19.1% (median 19.2; range 1.8β29.6) | 439 (incl. 110 labelled just "Skunk") | Jikomes & Zoorob 2018 data (CC0) |
| CBD, WA I-502 | median 0.11% | 439 | same |
| Leafly page | THC 17%, CBG 1%; myrcene > limonene > pinene | not stated | 15 |
Computed files: research/dataset/fragments/_computed_skunk-nl-haze_smith2022_stats.json and _computed_skunk-nl-haze_wa_i502_stats.json. The myrcene/pinene dominance fits the "earthy/skunky" consumer descriptors. The compounds responsible for the "skunk" odour itself are not measured in these terpene panels (open question).
8. Community sentiment
Sample: a Reddit comment sample of n=1,377 mentioning "Skunk #1"/"Skunk 1" (2011β2026, up to 100 per year per query; top subreddits r/microgrowery, r/trees, r/cannabiscultivation, r/uktrees), via the Pullpush archive, keyword-coded (theme percentages recorded in RESEARCH_LOG; a later re-run was rate-limited and the on-disk raw file retains only 216 comments);8 Leafly 4.1/5 from 531 ratings, eight recent reviews read;21 ICMag 2006 thread;4 Alchimia comments.7
- Nostalgia / "old school" / foundational status (β17% of Reddit comments; common; positive). Skunk #1 is cited as a classic, in UK/Canadian 1990s hydro memories, and as heirloom IBL stock people want to preserve.8
- Smell: skunky/dank vs. sweet (β17% mention smell, β13% sweet/fruity; common; mixed). There is a recurring complaint that modern seed lines are sweet and that the "dead skunk" RKS is lost or "elusive". This matches Sam's own account of breeding it sweeter.4228
- Grower-friendly and productive (yield β8%, easy β2%; occasional; positive). Outdoor growers in cool climates report large yields.89
- Effects: potent (β9%), relaxing (β4%), uplifting/cerebral (β4%); occasional; positive. The 1987 Connoisseur called it "clean, cerebral".5 Leafly users lead with relaxed, happy and euphoric.21
- Anxiety/paranoia, dry eyes/mouth (β2% on Reddit; Leafly negatives); occasional; negative.218
- UK "skunk" as a pejorative media term (occasional; neutral to negative). UK users object to tabloid use of "skunk".168
Representative paraphrases:
- A 2018 UK grower said he had grown several skunks, mainly Skunk #1, and questioned the word because UK media use "skunk" as a propaganda term tied to psychosis.[^23a]
- A 2021 r/cannabiscultivation commenter called true skunk-spray aroma "elusive" and pointed to sellers of claimed 1980s RKS stock.[^23b]
- A 2023 r/cannabisbreeding user described inheriting a relative's 1980s IBL lines (Skunk #1, Big Bud, Nevil's Haze) and wanting to preserve them.[^23c]
- A 2024 Leafly reviewer said a current Skunk #1 was the closest in 28 years to what they had in 1994.21
Era shift. 1976β1985: the pungent RKS era, kept by seed. 1985β1995: the uniform "sweet" Dutch line wins the first Cup and becomes the base of most Dutch hybrids. 2000s+: "skunk" becomes a generic UK potency term. 2015+: nostalgia, and hunts for the lost stink.461614
Overall score: 78/100 (Leafly 4.1/5, n=531, plus a predominantly positive or nostalgic Reddit sample). Sample estimate: ~531 Leafly ratings + ~1,377 Reddit comments (keyword-coded, ~15 hand-read) + ~40 forum posts.
Conflicts with lab data. Consumers prize the "skunk" smell, but the lab panels do not measure whatever compounds produce it. Smith 2022 terpene data (myrcene/pinene-led, total about 1.6%) cannot tell sweet lines from RKS. Lab THC means (17β19%) are unremarkable next to its "potent" reputation; Sam himself argued that terpene-rich skunk at 17% can feel like 25%.2
9. Open questions / could not verify
- The year Sacred Seeds first sold Skunk #1 (1976 vs c.1978β80). No Sacred Seeds catalogue was found.
- Whether there is any Thai input.
- Sam's arrival date in the Netherlands (1984 vs spring 1985), and whether Nevil's Seed Bank stock came from Cultivator's Choice or from a separate importation.
- Whether the alleged 1985 Santa Cruz arrest (VICE) happened; Sam denies being busted.
- The 1985 Cultivator's Choice catalogue itself (known only through the Seedfinder quote).
- Dutch Passion's own page (HTTP 429) and the Cannabis Business Times obituary (403) could not be opened.
- No genotype data: Phylos pages redirect, and Kannapedia was not checked for Skunk #1.
