1. Summary
Super Silver Haze (SSH) is a three-way Haze hybrid of Skunk, Northern Lights and Haze. Green House Seed Co. (Amsterdam, founded 1994) released it in the mid-1990s, and it won the High Times Cannabis Cup overall in 1998 and 1999. The breeder also lists a 1997 hydro first.12 Seedfinder's tree gives ((Haze × Haze) × Skunk #1) × ((Haze × Haze) × NL #5), and Phylos (snippet only) gives Skunk × Haze mother × NL × Haze father.13 Breeding credit is contested. Green House founder Arjan Roskam says he worked with Nevil from 1994 to 2001 and "got only Neville's Haze and Super Silver Haze from him". Wikipedia credits Shantibaba (Scott Blakey), who co-founded Green House and later sold SSH through Mr. Nice with Nevil.1456 The two attributions may describe the same Green House team rather than conflict.
2. Identity
- Aliases: SSH, Super Silver Haze #1 (WA label).
- Type: mostly sativa; the breeder calls it "the most indica-leaning of the sativas".1
- Breeder/marketer: Green House Seed Co.; Nevil and/or Shantibaba (disputed); Mr. Nice Seedbank.146
- Propagation: seed (Green House now sells feminized only); clones circulate.1
3. Genetics & lineage claims
3a. Skunk × Northern Lights × Haze
Confidence: well-supported for the three components (breeder plus independent databases). The exact cross structure rests on database trees.137
3b. Credit: Nevil (via Arjan's statement)
3c. Credit: Shantibaba
Confidence: disputed.46 Shantibaba's Wikipedia page also says he and Nevil developed the NL5 × Haze seed line used as the base for many Haze hybrids.4
4. Timeline
- 1994 — Green House Seed Co. founded by Arjan Roskam with Shantibaba, working closely with Nevil.48
- 1997 — 1st Hydro, Cannabis Cup (breeder list).1
- 1998 — Overall Cup winner; Shantibaba also takes prizes with Mango Haze and Shantibaba's Hash.42
- 1999 — Overall Cup winner again.2
- 2002–2009 — Repeated High Life Cup wins entered by coffeeshops.1
- 2014–2017 — Common Washington retail label (554 tests).
5. Notable cuts / phenotypes / remakes
Phenotypes vary widely: lemon-dominant, sweet indica-leaning and lanky sativa types.1 A "sofresh cut" is mentioned by Phylos (snippet).3 Mr. Nice also sells a version.6
6. Historical descriptions by era
2010s–2020s. Breeder: strong, long-lasting, 10–11 weeks, up to 800 g/m².1 Growers report a profound uplifting high; 60–65 days for one grower; over 1.2 kg per plant outdoors, with fragile branches; lemon, hash and haze aroma.1
7. Cannabinoid & terpene profile
| Label | Measure | n | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smith 2022 | THC mean 18.5% (median 18.4; 0.8–27.6) | 357 | Smith 2022 data |
| Smith 2022 terpenes | myrcene 0.45, caryophyllene 0.26, terpinolene 0.19, limonene 0.17; dominant myrcene 60/121, caryophyllene 27, terpinolene 15 | 121 | Smith 2022 data |
| WA I-502 | THC mean 19.3% (median 19.7) | 554 | WA I-502 |
| Breeder claim | THC 18%, CBD 1.08%, CBN 1.95% | not stated | 1 |
The breeder's CBD claim conflicts with the lab median CBD of about 0.08%. Strain names are not reliable chemotype identifiers.
8. Community sentiment
The sample is 19 Seedfinder reviews (average 8.44/10) plus about 8 comments. Leafly returned 403 and Reddit could not be sampled.
- Uplifting, long-lasting, potent — common, positive.1
- Big yields — occasional, positive.1
- Lanky or fragile plants, phenotype spread, long flowering — occasional, negative.1
- Lemon/hash/haze aroma — occasional, positive.1
Paraphrases: a 2014 grower likened high doses to mild mushrooms; a 2020 outdoor grower got more than 1.2 kg per plant but needed netting; a 2016 grower advised starting several seeds and selecting.1
Era shift. It dominated the Cups in 1997–99, was then copied widely, and became a mainstream legal-market label by the mid-2010s.
Overall score: 84/100 (small sample).
Conflicts with lab data. The breeder's CBD figure is contradicted by the lab data (354/357 samples THC-dominant).
