1. Summary
"Hindu Kush" is both a place name and a seed line. The place is the mountain range on the Afghanistan–Pakistan border, which 1980s growers' literature already named as home of the indica hashish plant.1 The seed line is best documented as the Sensi Seeds / Seed Bank "Hindu Kush". Sensi's 1999 catalog calls it "This pure Kush originally from the Afghani/Pakistani mountain regions", with 45–50 days flowering.2 Today Sensi says the line was bred "exclusively within [its] own gene pool" over many generations, but names no collector, valley or year.3 Two 2020s retellings say Nevil Schoenmakers got "Hindu Kush" from Skunkman Sam (Sacred Seeds) in 1984 together with Skunk #1, Afghani #1 and Durban Poison.45 A single Seedfinder user comment (2022) says "Nevil's Hindu Kush" was a hybrid, "Kush4 × NL2". That would contradict the "pure landrace" claim, but it has no primary support.6 I found no first-hand account of who collected the seed. Many other vendors now sell unrelated "Hindu Kush" lines. Growers on Reddit regard several of these as not real landrace stock.78 Hindu Kush is often named as an OG Kush ancestor. Phylos (2018) called a link between OG Kush and the Hindu Kush landrace "unlikely", so that claim stays disputed (see og-kush).69
2. Identity
- Names/aliases: Hindu Kush, "Hindu", HK; "LA Hindu"/"LA Hindu Cut" (clone circulated in LA, used by Bodhi); "Heritage Hindu Kush" (Reeferman); Purple Hindu Kush (separate line).810
- Type as reported: indica ("100% indica", Sensi; "Hindu Kush Mountains landrace", Barney's Farm).310
- Region claimed: Hindu Kush range, Afghanistan/Pakistan. Specific valleys (e.g. Chitral, Parwan) appear only on retail blogs.32
- Era: in the US by 1984 at the latest (Sacred Seeds per retellings); Seed Bank/Sensi catalog line 1980s–present.452
- Propagation: seed (Sensi regular and feminized); clone selections ("LA Hindu").
3. Genetics & lineage claims
3a. Sensi/Seed Bank Hindu Kush is a pure indica line from the Afghan/Pakistani Hindu Kush, inbred within its own gene pool
Confidence: reported (breeder's own statement, but it gives no collector, date or site, and is uncorroborated by any independent primary record). Sensi 1999: "pure Kush originally from the Afghani/Pakistani mountain regions".2 Sensi 2026: "originates from the mountainous region of the Hindu Kush", selected "over many generations, breeding exclusively within their own gene pool".3
3b. The line came from Skunkman Sam / Sacred Seeds to Nevil in 1984
Confidence: reported (two later secondary retellings; no 1980s document found that names Hindu Kush in the Seed Bank's stock list).
Black (Leaf, 2022) lists Hindu Kush among the seeds Skunkman Sam brought to Amsterdam in 1984. McCormick (High Times, 2023) lists Hindu Kush among what Nevil received from Sam in 1984.45 The c.1986 Seed Bank cards in our catalog file do not include a "Hindu Kush" entry (see catalogs/seed-bank-of-holland-historic.json).
3c. "Nevil's Hindu Kush" was actually Kush4 × NL2 (a hybrid)
Confidence: reported (one anonymous user comment; conflicts with 3a). A 2022-04-19 Seedfinder user comment, made while repeating Marty Calabrese's OG Kush story, describes Nevil's Hindu Kush as "(Kush4 x NL2)".6 No breeder statement supports it.
3d. Hindu Kush is a parent of OG Kush
Confidence: disputed (see og-kush claims). Calabrese says OG Kush came from a Nevil Hindu Kush male × "Emerald Triangle". Barney's Farm and Seeds Here Now list "Chemdawg × Lemon Thai × Hindu Kush". Phylos found an OG–Hindu Kush landrace link "unlikely".6910
4. Timeline
- c.1000 CE — earliest known use of the mountain name on a map (Wikipedia). The popular "Hindu-killer" etymology is regarded as folk etymology.11
- Nov 1981 — High Times: C. indica "is native to the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan" and is used for sieved hashish.1
- 1984 — Nevil reportedly receives Hindu Kush from Sacred Seeds/Skunkman Sam.45
- Jun 1988 — High Times reader price report lists an "Afghani Hindu Kush indica".12
- 1999-11 — Sensi online catalog page for Hindu Kush (45–50 days).2
- 2010s — High Times includes Sensi Hindu Kush in a top-25 strains list (per Sensi; HT list not opened).3
- 2020s — Barney's Farm sells "Hindu Kush (Hindu Kush Mountains landrace)"; a 2026 r/microgrowery thread says it "has only been out for a few months" and is "no real Hindu Kush".710
5. Seed-vendor lineage
| Product | Vendor | Stated origin | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hindu Kush | Sensi Seeds (from Seed Bank era) | Afghan/Pakistani Hindu Kush; closed gene pool | reported (breeder claim)32 |
| Hindu Kush (fem/reg) | Barney's Farm | "Hindu Kush Mountains landrace", 100% indica, 55–65 days | reported (breeder claim)10 |
| Master Kush | Sensi White Label / Barney's | "two landraces from India and Afghanistan" / "Hindu Kush Mountain Range" | reported10 |
| LA Hindu cut (× Kashmir, × '88 G13HP) | Bodhi Seeds | LA clone | reported (reseller)10 |
| Tuna | Reeferman | "Heritage Hindu Kush" | reported10 |
| Hindu Kush F2 | Hazeman | not stated | reported (reseller)10 |
No vendor I found documents a collection trip for its Hindu Kush. Real farmer-sourced Hindu Kush–region seed is usually sold under district names instead (e.g. Chitral, Panjshir, Mazar). See pakistani-chitral-kush and mazar-i-sharif.
6. Historical descriptions by era
- 1981: generic indica description: short, broad-leafed, hashish-producing.1
- 1999: 45–50 days flowering (Sensi).2
- 2026 (Sensi): 45–50 days; "sweet and earthy sandalwood" flavour; smell of wet pine; anaesthetic body effect "minus the couch lock".3
- Grower reports (2021–2026): dense, chunky buds, good for hash; bud rot reports on autoflower versions in high humidity.78
7. Cannabinoid & terpene profile
Caveat: names are not chemotype identifiers. Retail "Hindu Kush" is any product so named.
- Smith 2022 (flower): n=138 (labs 1, 2, 5; CA/OR/WA); THC mean 18.2% (range 6.9–26.2); all THC-dominant. Terpenes n=88: limonene dominant in 76/88 (mean 0.84%), caryophyllene 0.36%, myrcene 0.17%; total terpenes mean 2.34%. The limonene dominance is unusual for a supposed Afghan-type indica (cf. Afghani myrcene-dominant). It may reflect one large producer or one lab and should not be read as a landrace trait.13
- WA I-502 2014–17: n=228, 12 labs, 43 producers; THC mean 19.8%; 1 chemotype II sample.14
- State records 2015–2022 (MA, MI, WA): n=137; THC mean 19.4%.15
- Cannigma (2020) gives a compiled average THC of 17.1% (12.8–20.9) from unspecified COAs and websites.16
8. Community sentiment
- Common: classic hashy/earthy indica, dense buds, good hash yield, attractive colours.8
- Common (neg): vendor authenticity ("no real Hindu Kush"); bud rot in humid conditions.78
- Era shift: 1980s: one of the archetypal indicas sold by the Dutch seed trade; 2020s: name widely reused for unrelated commercial lines.
- Score: not estimated.
9. Open questions / could not verify
- Who collected the Sensi/Seed Bank Hindu Kush, and where? Is there any 1980s Seed Bank catalog line naming it?
- Is the "Kush4 × NL2" description of Nevil's Hindu Kush grounded in anything?
- The High Times "25 best strains" list naming Sensi Hindu Kush (date, wording) was not opened.
- Why Smith 2022 "Hindu Kush" samples are limonene-dominant: a producer/lab cluster? (product-level breakdown not done)
