1. Summary
OG Kush is a clone-only cultivar that entered Los Angeles in 1996 when Matt "Bubba" Berger carried cuttings from the Gainesville, Florida grow circle to his friend Josh Del Rosso ("Josh D"), who propagated it and whose cut is now treated as the reference "Josh D" OG. That transfer is attested by Josh D's own brand pages and by multiple interviews, and is the best-supported fact in the whole history.1234 What the Florida plant was is unresolved: the Josh D/Berger circle describes a bag-seed selection from Florida "Krippy"/"Supernaut" weed circa 1992 (Alec Anderson) renamed "Kush" after a "Kushberries" remark;567 Florida grower Marty Calabrese claims it and Triangle Kush are sibling seeds from an accidental 1991 cross of an "Emerald Triangle" mother with a Nevil's Hindu Kush male;89 and a widely copied forum text attributes it to Chemdawg Γ (Lemon Thai Γ Old World Paki Kush) made by "Putz" in Sunset Beach, CA, which is also the source of the "Ocean Grown" name.108 A fourth version makes it a selfed bag-seed of Chem 91 found around Lake Tahoe.118 Chemdog (Greg Krzanowski) denies OG Kush descends from Chemdog while believing they are related.12 The name is likewise disputed: Josh D says "OG" was added to mean "Original" to distinguish the original cut from imitators;12 "Ocean Grown", "Original Gangster" and "Overgrown" circulate without a primary source. Phylos's genotyping (2018) found the variety has low genetic variation and that several named LA cuts are genetically identical to the Josh D cut, and judged a Hindu Kush landrace link unlikely.13
2. Identity
- Names/aliases: OG Kush; "Kush" / "The Kush" (Florida, earlyβmid 1990s); "Krippy"/"Kryptonite" (generic Florida slang for top-grade cannabis, per Josh D and others);51413 "OGers Kush"/"OG'er" (late-1990s LA tag);515 "Josh D OG", "OGKS" (Josh D's licensed product name);216 "Club 33 OG" (3C's retail rename of Josh D cut, per forum);5 "Real OG Kush Story" (Josh D's cup entry name).1716
- Type as reported: indica-dominant hybrid in most catalogs; Seedfinder "indica"; Leafly "hybrid"; consumers split on whether it feels sativa- or indica-leaning.18198
- Era: Florida circle 1991β1995; Los Angeles from 1996; forum-era seed releases from ~2004 (OrgnKid S1s) and ~2006β2008 (DNA/Reserva Privada, Cali Connection).53
- Originator/keeper: no "breeder" in the conventional sense; Matt "Bubba" Berger (Florida), Josh Del Rosso (LA propagation and distribution); Alec Anderson or Marty Calabrese claimed as the Florida seed-popper depending on account.568
- Propagation: clone-only original; many seed lines claim S1/BX/outcross of specific cuts (see Β§5βΒ§6).
- Region: Gainesville/Orlando/South Florida β Silver Lake and the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles.514
3. Genetics & lineage claims
3a. Florida "Krippy/Supernaut" bag-seed selection (1992), named "Kush" in Gainesville, carried to LA in 1996
Confidence: well-supported (for the 1996 FloridaβLA transfer: verified by Josh D's own statements).
Josh D's brand site states his "affair with OG Kush began in 1996 when his friend Matt 'Bubba' Berger shared a cutting" and that "the OG stands for Original".12 A 2019 ICMag post by a grower who sourced the cut from Josh D quotes a longer statement attributed to Josh D's company website: Alec Anderson "first popped the seed" of the "'92 OG"; it reached Berger in Florida in 1992; Josh D was the first in LA to work it; in Florida it was called "Kush" or "Krippy".5 Clarke & Richmond (2020) independently write that Berger "acquired a local Floridian favorite known as 'Krippy' or 'Supernaut' from local grower Alec Anderson" and that a friend's "Kush Berries" remark gave it the name.6 Berger himself, in a 2020 interview, described finding a Kush plant in a bag of "Supernaut" bought in South Florida and grown in Gainesville, and called himself "one of the 6 original godfathers of the OG Kush".7 Beard Bros (2018) adds that Florida "Kryptonite" was said to come from Seattle in bricks and that Berger later returned to Florida and brought back "Kush, Bubba, and a strain called KY".14 Leafly (Devine) reports Josh D recalling that of five cuttings brought west only one survived.3 Kenji Fujishima recalls smoking Josh D's OG by late 1996 from a 4β6-light Hollywood house.20 Caveat: all of these trace to the same social circle; the genetics behind the 1992 Florida bag seed are unknown.
3b. Calabrese/Origins TK: accidental 1991 South Florida cross, Emerald Triangle Γ Nevil's Hindu Kush; OG Kush and Triangle Kush are siblings
Confidence: reported (originator's own statement; uncorroborated; conflicts with 3c/3d).
Seedfinder reproduces an Instagram statement attributed to Marty Calabrese (@origins_tk_ogk) and Josh D (@therealogkushstory): both Triangle Kush and OG Kush seeds were "made in south Florida in 1991 in the same garage"; the mother was a strain his circle called "Emerald Triangle" (from ~1987); a pre-sexed Hindu Kush seed from a pack bought from Nevil in Amsterdam in 1989 "created a bit of unseen pollen near the AC intake" and seeded a 12-light garage; pounds were sold to a friend near Orlando, whose circle found the Triangle Kush seed and the "Kush" seed later named OG Kush in California; "OG is not Chemdog simple facts".8 A 2023 press release and trade article describe Calabrese as "creator of OG Kush and Triangle Kush" who made the seeds "by mere chance".9 A Seedfinder user comment (2022-04-19) repeats the lineage as "neville's hindu kush (Kush4 x NL2) x emerald triangle".8 I could not open the Instagram post itself. Note the internal date tension with 3a (Anderson popping seeds in 1992 is compatible with 1991 seed production; the Orlando link appears in both).
3c. Chemdawg Γ (Lemon Thai Γ Old World Paki Kush) β the "Putz"/Sunset Beach story
Confidence: folklore (widely repeated; no primary source; earliest dated copy I could verify is a 2010 forum repost; rejected by Josh D's circle, by Calabrese, and by Chemdog).
The text, attributed on Seedfinder to "Kailua kid from Sierra Seeds", says: in late 1993 "John from Grass Valley" got the Chem Dog cut and shared it with "Jerry (cowboy)" and "Harold (Putz) from Sunset Beach"; Putz bred a male he called "the secret ingredient" (Lemon Thai Γ Old World Paki Kush) to Chem Dog; buds circulated in south LA County in 1995; Putz moved to New Zealand in 1996 and gave his stock to "Mike (mad dog)" in Downey, whose seed sales produced the SFV cut and whose cut to Orange County became "Larry"; the same text derives Bubba Kush from a "West Coast Dog" line.810 It was posted to THCFarmer on 2010-06-22 by a member who said he "found this" and had two people who "can verify part of this story"; replies in that thread were skeptical and one preferred the Chem 91 story.10 Web search indicates an earlier THCFarmer copy dated 2009-10-14, which I could not open.21 Secondary sites (Cannigma citing Backes's Cannabis Pharmacy; seed catalogs such as Dinafem, Royal Queen Seeds, HSO; DNA Genetics' blog) repeat "Chemdawg Γ Lemon Thai Γ Pakistani/Hindu Kush" as the lineage.22232425 HSO's own blog calls Chemdawg Γ Hindu Kush "a wild guess" and says the Thai/Kush story cannot be verified.25 JetLife175's ICMag history explicitly rejects "John from grass valley" and "old world paki".5
3d. Selfed (S1) bag-seed of Chem 91 found near Lake Tahoe (1994 or 1996)
Confidence: reported (single named proponent; denied by Chemdog).
Danny Danko (High Times, 2016) relays a legend that a since-deceased crew member travelled to Lake Tahoe circa 1994 with an S1 bag seed of Chem 91, calls it "less easily substantiated" but "compelling", and notes Chemdog suggested seeded Chem buds sold at Tampa Dead shows as a possible Florida link.11 Seedfinder's older "Story #1" gives the same with 1996.8 Krzanowski "denies" OG Kush is an offspring of Chemdog "though he believes they are definitely related".12 A 2010 THCFarmer poster found OG's structure "very similar to the chems".10
3e. "Simply Chemdawg Γ Hindu Kush" / Chemdawg sibling (secondary-site consensus)
Confidence: reported (secondary databases only).
Leafly's strain page lists parents "Chemdawg Γ Hindu Kush" and simultaneously says the Florida origin is "supposedly" a NorCal strain crossed with Chemdawg, Lemon Thai and an Amsterdam Hindu Kush.18 Leafly's genealogy piece says Danko "theorizes" Chemdog as parent of both OG Kush and Sour Diesel and calls OG's parentage "speculative".3 Phylos stated it is "unlikely" OG shares heritage with the Hindu Kush landrace.13 Clarke & Richmond infer from terpene profile and agronomy that it is "closely related to many other Afghani varieties".6
3f. Bubba Kush's relationship to OG Kush
Confidence: disputed.
Berger: Bubba derives from Northern Lights seeds, pollinated ~1997 by a Kush plant from a Supernaut bag.7 Beard Bros: Bubba Kush came from an accidental pollination of a lower nug on a Kush plant in the LA basement grow.14 Leafly (Devine): Berger and Del Rosso crossed the Florida "Bubba" with OG Kush to make Pre-98 Bubba Kush.3 Kenji Fujishima: seeds from Josh D (via Mike Rowan) mid/late 1996 were grown in B-Real's bathroom and yielded "Kush Bubba".20 Leafly (Stovall): B-Real "accidentally created Bubba Kush".4 The Putz text derives Bubba from an unrelated "West Coast Dog" line.10

7. Historical descriptions by era
2000β2006. Wikipedia (Dec 2006): "very potentβ¦ mind-numbing levels of potency", pedigree "a closely guarded secret", OG as "original gangster" (or "ocean grownβ¦ west coast").27 Josh D circle: 2 lb/light by 2000 in Studio City once "dialed in".5 Forum lore: pounds $8β10k; cut tightly held.5
2007β2014. THCFarmer 2010: proliferation of renamed cuts ("platinum sfv h.a. fire ghost abusiveβ¦ lemon larry") confuses growers; structure compared to Chems.10 Dinafem-seed growers on Seedfinder (2014β2019): strong, long-lasting indica stone; pheno variation (some piney, stretchy, sativa-like; others squat "zickig" growth); short flowering, high yield claimed by some, failures by others.23 Leafly cultivation guide: difficult, 8 weeks, moderate yield, prone to powdery mildew and bud rot, heavy Ca/Mg feeder.50
2015βpresent. Clarke & Richmond: "not an easy plant to grow: sensitive to light and nutrient levels, susceptible to pests", throws occasional male flowers and selfed seed; extreme mould/mildew susceptibility inherited from Afghan ancestry.6 Phylos: "fickle-to-grow", "stress-melting euphoria", a funk Josh says you "can't quite put your finger on".13 Josh D brand: lemon/lime, pine, earth, spice and fuel; uplift then relaxation; "users don't build up a tolerance" (marketing).352 Leafly reviewers 2025β2026: earthy/pine/lemon/diesel; heavy body, sleepy, hungry; dizziness and dry mouth; some find it "overrated" or inconsistent between vendors.19
8. Cannabinoid & terpene profile
Caveat: strain names are not reliable chemotype identifiers; Smith et al. (2022) and Reimann-Philipp et al. (2020) show name-to-chemistry mapping is weak, and genetically distinct plants are sold as "OG Kush".515213

Large datasets: Jikomes & Zoorob 2018 (WA, 175,136 flower results; lab medians 17.7β23.2% THC) and Smith et al. 2022 (89,923 samples, six states) do not report OG Kush individually in the text.5551 Phylos (2018): OG Kush has relatively low genetic variation; many LA cuts are clonal copies of the Josh D cut; S1 seeds "should be considered a different variety".13 Kannapedia: no OG Kush entry located (only crosses).56
9. Community sentiment
- Potency / heavy body high β common, positive, all eras (2006 Wikipedia; 2010 forums; Leafly 2014β2026).271019
- Aroma (lemon-pine-fuel, "gas") β common, positive; single most cited attraction.351934
- Difficult / finicky grower, low-moderate yield, PM-prone, nutrient-sensitive β common among growers, negative, 2010sβpresent.6502313
- Authenticity anxiety ("is this the real OG?") β common 2008βpresent; renamed cuts and "fake Kush" are a recurring complaint; forum threads devoted to "the best OG clone".104315
- Overrated / inconsistent between vendors β occasional, negative, 2015βpresent.19
- Dizziness, dry mouth, anxiety at high dose β occasional, negative.19
Representative paraphrases: a 2010 THCFarmer member joked that the flood of cut names ("platinum sfv h.a. fire ghost abusiveβ¦") makes OG hopelessly confusing10; a 2025 ICMag poster said the "BTY OG" is in practice the Josh D cut and that OG renames are "mind boggling"43; a 2026 Leafly reviewer asked why OG Kush feels sativa-like from one shop and pure indica from another19; a 2017 Seedfinder grower kept Dinafem OG as a garden staple because it stretches enough to flower small23; a 2019 Seedfinder grower rated the same line 0/10 after seedling failures.23
Era shift: 1996β2005 scarcity/reverence β 2008β2014 proliferation, price collapse and authenticity disputes510 β 2015+ legal-market "verified cut" marketing (Phylos, Wonderland, Josh D brand).132
Overall score: 80/100 (Leafly 4.3/5 from 5,697 ratings; grower sentiment markedly lower than consumer). Sample-size estimate: ~5,700 Leafly ratings + 21 Seedfinder Dinafem reviews + ~60 forum posts read (THCFarmer 2010, ICMag 2019β2025). Reddit could not be sampled (all public JSON/archive endpoints blocked or rate-limited; site-restricted web search returned no Reddit threads).
Conflicts with lab data: consumers treat "OG Kush" as a single potency/effect profile, but WA data show "Ghost OG" averaging >28% versus 19.4% for "OG Kush" despite Ghost being described as the same cut, and Leafly reviewers report sativa-like vs indica-like experiences under the same name.3619
10. Open questions / could not verify
- What the pre-1992 Florida genetics were ("Supernaut"/"Krippy" source; whether Calabrese's 1991 garage seeds and Anderson's 1992 bag seeds are the same event).
- Any primary (pre-2009) source for the Putz / Lemon Thai Γ Paki Kush story, or for "Kailua kid"/Sierra Seeds; THCFarmer 2009 thread not opened.

- Kannapedia / Phylos genotype report specific to the Josh D cut (Phylos pages now redirect; one search snippet cited "OG Kush 92" clones in the Galaxy β unverified).
- Official 2010 Amsterdam Cannabis Cup results page (Kosher Kush 1st Indica rests on Wikipedia's compiled list and secondary pages).
- Emerald Cup 2018 placing conflict (2nd per Leafly and Josh D's site vs 9th per Seedfinder).
- Whether B-Real "coined" the name OG Kush (single Leafly article).
