Cinderella 99

1. Summary

Cinderella 99 is a sativa-dominant seed line released by Brothers Grimm Seeds (breeders "MrSoul" = Rick Campanella and "Sly") around the turn of 1998/1999 and named "in honor of 1999" per the 2001 Seeds Direct catalog.¹ MrSoul's own account, first posted on Cannabis World in June 2000 and repeated with variations through 2025, is that a female he called "Princess" grew from a seed found in a 2-gram Sensi-branded bag of Jack Herer bought at Coffeeshop Sensi Smile in Amsterdam (he has given the year as both 1996 and 1997), and that C99 is Princess "cubed": three successive backcrosses of males to the Princess clone (P.50 → P.75 → P.88 "Cinderella 88" → P.94/C99), with a single early Shiva Skunk contribution to stiffen branches.²³⁴ Details are internally inconsistent across his own tellings: whether the Shiva Skunk entered as a female crossed to Princess's brother or as a male crossed to Princess, and whether C99 is the P.94 generation or is Princess × P.94 (which he later labelled "technically P97"). His partner Sly stated publicly that he did not believe Princess had any Jack Herer in it at all.⁵ Brothers Grimm closed in 2002; the line survived through growers' clones and F2/BX remakes (Joey Weed, Mosca, Female Seeds and others) until MrSoul relaunched in Colorado in 2015 with Duke Diamond and reissued C99 in 2016 from a Princess clone returned by friends and a male grown from seed stored since 2002; many long-time growers report the reissue differs from the original (purple phenotypes, longer flowering).⁶⁷⁸ Lab-aggregate chemistry is thin and sources disagree on the dominant terpene.

Confidence: verified (breeder's own statement, dated repost) A compilation of MrSoul's Cannabis World posts (his post header reads "Registered: Dec 1999 / posted June 10, 2000") was reposted verbatim on Rollitup in December 2010.² Key statements: Princess came from "a seed found in a Jack Herer bud I bought in Amsterdam near the Sensi Seed Bank at 'Coffeeshop Sensi Smile'… a 2 gr. cello-pack with the Sensi logo… it had about 10 seeds so I assume she's an F2 JH"; "I crossed my ShivaSkunk female with one of the males from the same group of seeds that Princess came from. THIS cross produced a male which was then crossed to Princess, creating 'P.50'"; "Each generation is the result of crossing a male from the previous generation to Princess herself"; "P.88 = Renamed Cinderella 88 when first released"; "And now P.94 = Cinderella 99." A second quote in the same compilation gives the formula "P.50 = Princess/(ShivaSkunk/Princess'Brother); P.75 = Princess/P.50; Cinderella 88 = Princess/P.75; Cinderella 99 = Princess/Cinderella 88", and a third says "The progression goes: P.50, P.75, P.88, P.94, and P.97… The P.88 seeds are available now, and the P.94 will be available around Christmas time."² The same text (headed "C99 FAQ", with a "REPOST" dated 1997 for the seed find) was reposted on Overgrow.com in 2022 by a member who had received it privately around 2000.⁵ Flowering of Princess is given as 50 days 12/12; claimed improvement over Princess: "25% greater yield and a stronger branch structure".

3b. MrSoul, 2017–2025 — Shiva Skunk male × Princess; C99 = Princess × P.94 ("technically P97")

Confidence: verified (breeder's own statements) — disputed with 3a on two details The "Cinderella Story – as told by MrSoul (last updated for seedfinder.eu 15 March 2017)" says: "In 1996, I discovered a few seeds in a bud of Jack Herer I bought @ 'Sensi Smile'"; Princess's two sisters were Genius (mother of the Apollo lines) and Café Girl (Rosetta Stone), plus three males not preserved; "I crossed a male from a heavy-yielding, dense, resinous strain, Sensi's Shiva Skunk. Crossing that male to Princess created the 'P.50' generation"; "Cinderella 99 seeds are created from a male P94 crossed to Princess, which is technically P97."³ A Facebook post quoted on Seedfinder's Cinderella 88 page: "It goes P50, P75, P88, P94, then P97=Cinderella 99."⁹ The 2023 official history page repeats the 1996 date, the Shiva Skunk male, and "P.94, the generation which, when crossed to Princess yields… Cinderella 99."⁴ In the 2025 Alchimia interview MrSoul says "The Shiva Skunk was only used as the male in the P50 generation" and "The final 'formula' to create C99 is Princess x C94."¹³ The Dope Magazine profile (2018) likewise: "Cinderella 99 seeds are created from a male P94 crossed to Princess."⁷ Seedfinder also carries a separate "P94 (Brothers Grimm)" entry described as "Princess x Cinderella 88 (P.88)".¹⁴

Reconciliation note (not a resolution): the 2000 text sometimes equates C99 with the P.94 seed generation and elsewhere with Princess × C88 (which is P.94 by MrSoul's own arithmetic), while from 2017 he calls the sold seed Princess × P.94 male (= P.97). Whether this reflects a change in which generation was sold, a relabelling, or loose wording is unknown. The Shiva Skunk entry point (female × Princess brother vs. male × Princess) is a direct contradiction between his 2000 and 2017+ accounts; the 2000 account is contemporaneous.

3c. Sly — "not a Jack Herer hybrid at all"

Confidence: reported (co-breeder's statement, preserved only in a 2022 repost of a c. 2000 FAQ) In "SLY's Take" within the C99 FAQ: "i DO NOT believe this is a JH hybrid… i don't think it has any JH in it at all… there is NO way IMHO that a cross pollination with any unknown father plant could bring a JH flowering time down to 49 days… the fact that there were other females out of the same seed batch that had the same flowering time shows it was not and freak."⁵ MrSoul himself concedes the father is "a totally unidentified mystery plant" and that the JH identity rests on the coffeeshop label plus his later tasting of verified JH.³ Overgrow members in 2022 split on this (some: "it's a jack herm"; others doubt a ~68% NL5 cross could produce the pineapple/mango sativa profile).⁵

3d. Secondary/retail simplifications — "Jack Herer × Shiva Skunk"; "Princess × Shiva Skunk → C88 → × Princess → C99"

Confidence: folklore (widely repeated; contradicts the breeder's generation-by-generation account) Leafly lists parents as Jack Herer and Shiva Skunk;¹⁵ Weedmaps shows "Jack Herer" twice as parents while its text gives the Princess/C88 version;¹⁶ numerous dispensary/retailer pages repeat "Princess × Shiva Skunk male, cubed to Cinderella 88, then × Princess". Highboldtage (2010) already flagged a "Purple Cindy" listing calling C99 "Jack Herer × ShivaSkunk" as conflicting with MrSoul.¹⁷

3e. Female Seeds' C99 — a separate construction

Confidence: verified (breeder's own description) for what Female Seeds claims; relationship to BG stock is reported Female Seeds: "Years of experimenting with the original Brothers Grimm C99 led to the creation of our very own C99"; lineage "C99 x C99"; Ferry started work in 1999 and launched it at the company's birth in 2003; current batch backcrossed to two selected phenotypes, one grapefruit and one pineapple; the breeder guesses the deep origin as "a long flowering Sweet Tai landrace crossed with a short flowering Sativa. Most likely, the Durban Poison"; claims "unusually high CBD content for a Sativa"; 8–9 weeks.¹⁸ An ICMag 2014 commenter claimed "FS C'99 is only half Cinderella 99" (unverified).¹⁹

3f. Relaunch (2016) parentage — original Princess clone × male from original seed stock

Confidence: verified (breeder's statement) that this is what was done; disputed whether the result matches the 1999 release Seedfinder's "Cinderella 99 2016" breeder text: "Select individuals grown from the original batch of C99 were evaluated until a male was chosen to pollenate the original 'Holy Grail' Princess female… This batch produces a fairly high percentage of purple phenotypes."⁶ MrSoul to Dope (2018): "I had trusted friends holding clones of my two most important females… Then it was simply a question of what male to use as a donor. I had seeds of the male I originally used stored at my grandmother's house since 2002."⁷ Alchimia (2025): the new version is "EXACTLY the SAME as in 1999."¹³ Community dissent is in §5 and §8.

Retail blogs assert a terpinolene-led profile (0.3–1.2%) without citing any lab; this conflicts with Leafly (limonene) and Cannigma (linalool/caryophyllene) and is not recorded as data.
