Terpene explorer

What labs actually measure in flower. Lab data: Smith et al. 2022 (CC0) and 2014–2026 state testing records. Most effect claims about terpenes are untested in people at the doses in smoked flower. We grade each one.

Reference

Bisabolol

Dominant terpene in 0 strains · typical level when dominant n/a of flower weight

Aroma: fruity, nutty, with hints of coconut (JECFA)

Also found in: German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla — first isolated from it), candeia tree (Eremanthus erythropappus), Salvia runcinata

Boiling point: 314 °C (760 mmHg)

Reported effects and how strong the evidence is

  • preclinicalAnti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibiotic and anticancer activities reported (review, largely preclinical); FDA GRAS status for flavour use (in vitro)
  • preclinicalAnti-inflammatory cytokine changes and relaxation of pregnant human myometrium strips in vitro (at 560–1,860 µM) (in vitro)

Not supported: Bisabolol in cannabis is soothing or anti-irritant when smoked — evidence is for topical/cosmetic and in-vitro use; ~150 °C bisabolol boiling/'vaporization' figures in cannabis charts — that matches the 12 mmHg value (151–152 °C), not atmospheric pressure
