Terpene explorer
What labs actually measure in flower. Lab data: Smith et al. 2022 (CC0) and 2014–2026 state testing records. Most effect claims about terpenes are untested in people at the doses in smoked flower. We grade each one.
Reference
Terpinolene
Dominant terpene in 174 strains · typical level when dominant 0.62% of flower weight
Aroma: sweet-piney, oily, pleasant (JECFA), pine (FEMA flavor profile), sweet, pine odour; somewhat sweet, citrus flavour (HSDB)
Also found in: citrus fruit oils (navel and sweet orange, bergamot, mandarin, tangerine), many tree species (emissions), juniper, cypress, tea tree, cannabis (Cannabis sativa)
Boiling point: 185 °C (760 mmHg)
Reported effects and how strong the evidence is
- preclinicalInhaled terpinolene reduced locomotor activity in mice, reduced caffeine-induced hyperactivity and prolonged pentobarbital sleep (animal)
Not supported: Terpinolene-dominant ('Jack Herer'-type) strains are energizing/'sativa' — untested; the only animal inhalation study found shows sedation, not stimulation; Terpinolene is an 'uplifting' terpene — no human data
